 Carpages.ca - 2005 Ford Mustang Preview
A source at Roush Engineering, one of Ford's racing development partners, has been reported to have leaked the news that they are testing the new C170 platform for its Mustang application.
Ford still plans to convert the chassis to rear-wheel drive, although such an experiment has never been attempted by Dearborn before.
If these C170 rumors are true the next Mustang won't be able to gain from the obvious advancements derived from the DEW98 platform's years of tuning - the Lincoln debuted in 2000 and the T-Bird in 2002 - and sophisticated design.

Ford is far worse, the Mustang has been on that Fox platform for 30 years.
But agreed, Ford and the Fox platform are probably the worst in the industry as far as age goes.
Ford is the exact opposite of Honda...it is a terribly irresponsible manufacturer, misuses its resources, and treats the consumer like shit by giving them outdated (and perhaps dangerous) cars rebated heavily.

Ford attempted to market the sedan version in Europe as a mini-executive car by only offering it in the Ghia trim level, something that it had tried before with the Orion of the 1980s.
A replacement, codenamed C305, on a new platform shared with the Volvo S40 and Mazda 3 and already previewed with the Focus C-Max, is due in late 2004.
Ford has apparently decided that a completely new car would not be profitable in the heavily price- and incentive-driven North American market.

This platform isn't all that solid when compared to the competition, and it certainly can't compete in handling, ride quality, and driver feedback when stacked up against the likes of the Mazda3 or the Volvo S40 — both of which are monumental improvements over the US Focus and yet have completely different personalities.

From: NY Ford, dinged in recent years for its blandmobiles, is getting its mojo back with an audacious rear-wheel-drive family car based on the Mustang that's coming at the end of the decade, knowledgeable industry sources say.
The truth is, if Ford does do a RWD sedan, the Mustang chasis would have to be so dramatically reworked that it probably wouldn't be the same chasis when they were done with it.
IMO Ford's future can't afford not to build a car for American enthusiasts (Loyal) that want V8 torque and soul, along with moderate dimensions (the Charger is a PIG) or a wimpy FWD (Impala 5.3) chassis.

As the original article stated, Ford can command a selling price in Europe that allows them to bring newer models and platforms to market and be successful.
So stretching the C170 platform as long as possible (just as GM stretched the 1995 J-body) makes sense from a financial point of view (no huge retooling costs, less risk of screwups like in 2000 with the Focus recalls, etc.).
Note that Ford is giving the C1 platform to its "premium" brands (Mazda and Volvo), where people are more likely to be looking for quality.
