Ford had apparently decided long ago that D2C made sense for the Falcon (it does), and that the Falcon was going to move onto this chassis in about 07-08 my.
Rather abruptly, Ford decided that the old chassis would be fine and at one point announced that the next Falcon would not go on the D2C platform for reasons mostly involving costs.
Ford has said publically that it wants to move Falcon over to D2C, but is uncertain wether it is economically attractive to move Falcon to this platform anytime soon due to plant issues in Australia, etc..

and ford will never have a low 14sec amazing handeling car for 20k when the mustang is only doing mid 13's and is in no way as nimble.
What would have been nice as far as the Focus goes was the SVE Focus R. But honestly the market being what it was for cars like that we were lucky there was a SVT Focus.
Ford had to leave a few of the holes in the grill filled in so it would have more downforce on the frontend because of its lack of aero.

Ford execs are officially mum, including product chief Phil Martens, who said as recently as the Detroit auto show that no decision had been made on the Cobra’s suspension.
Ford apparently won't give us the chance...and the general attitude seems to be that the solid axle is just good enough and cheap.

I'm not 100% sure, but I belive that Fox-4 was the Name of the platform for the 1994-2004 Mustang.
Same old weak platform that has been used since 1994 and is based off a 1979 Fairmont.

In Nashville at the MCA 40th, Ford engineers shared that the platform was "inspired" by DEW but was developed as all new specifically for the S197 Mustang.

While badge engineering is pretty superficial, platform sharing, like that of the GM Epsilon platform or even Ford’s C1 platform, is much more involved from an engineering standpoint.
In fact, the corolla and Matrix are built at the same plant on the same platform along with the Pontiac Vibe and the Scion xB and xA ride on the same platform the echo is derived from.
The criticism of the practices of platform sharing need to be taken in perspective of what they mean to the consumer.

The revision is a interm step to save money until a lower cost version of the SIGMA platform can be made.

the D2C platform is designed to handle an independent rear setup as well as a live axle.
And given the wider track base from where the front wheel was moved forward 5 inches, the car should be a lot more nimble than it's fox predecessor.

I know that the doors and other elements would need tweaking in the name of production reality (rear passenger room, for instance, would need a bit of extending), but FoMoCo has learned some bitter lessons lately about being too conservative...something breathtaking like this would be a helluva fix.
I just don't think Ford has the balls to build it with exterior styling (minus the fancy door operation).
Thwe Iosis would not have served the Mustang as well as the current car...having a legitmate history of great styling is a fantastic luxury.
