The 3.0 L V6 was a variant of the Ford Duratec 30 engine, and was available with either a manual or automatic transmission (both 5-speed; with automatic transmissions having a manual-shift option).
As a result of this change in the lineup, the base MSRP for the Lincoln LS increased from roughly $32,000 in 2004 to $39,945, moving the LS from the entry-level luxury segment into the mid-luxury segment.
It is rumored that a replacement, based on the Lincoln MKS from the Ford/Volvo D3 platform, is scheduled for the 2007 or 2008 model years.

The D385, which will arrive in 2007 on Ford's D3 platform, will replace Lincoln's lame-duck LS sedan; E386 will be the flagship Lincoln, riding on a long-wheelbase version of D3 and arriving in 2008.
The former is a Ford, which is likely to be called "Freestyle" and to take the place of traditional minivans in Ford's lineup; D472 is a Lincoln version of the vehicle.

At Ford, the version of the P2 chassis used for Ford and Mercury models is referred to as “D3”.
Ford’s assembly plant in Chicago is already set up to produce P2-based cars, churning out Ford 500, Freestyle and Mercury Montego models daily.

Ford;s explanation that it is short on cash due to retiree costs and health care costs is highly specious.
If Ford is now claiming that that is why they are cash short, then they weren't fulfilling their fiscal responsibility in keeping these programs financially solvent in the first place.

Another such fix is "pinning" the cam, or inserting a pin in the sprocket to keep it aligned on the camshaft.
Its shameful that Ford overlooked the V8 SHO, considering they made a point to make the V6 SHO extremely durable...if you followed the service intervals as recommended.
The V8 SHO guys are such a small segment and most won't notice the problem until its too late or its with a 2nd/3rd owner who has no idea what a ticking time bomb that motor is...so its a lot harder to form a class action lawsuit that way.

I'd like to think that given the popularity of Dodge/Chrysler RWD vehicles of late, ford would be smarter than to switch the CV/GM to a FWD D3 platform.
The technology may be several decades old, but the Panther platform has been highly refined over the years (specifically with the 2003 MY), and has been proven to be extremely durable (which is why you see so many Panther police cars and taxis).
It appears Ford is going to stick with the Panther for a few more years, which for anyone who has actually owned one, knows is good news.

Lincoln is planning to overhaul its sedan lineup, and recently said it will kill its midrange LS sedan in favor of another vehicle with a similar position in the lineup.
The car that will roughly occupy the LS' place in the lineup, known as D385, will arrive in model-year 2008 on Ford's D3 platform, and E386 will use a long-wheelbase version of the architecture.
Although Lincoln will position D385 and E386 similarly to that of the LS and Town Car, the models are said to be quite different from Lincoln's current cars.
