Ford Excursion wandering and tracking problems explained | SuperMotors.net
Ford, responding to demand in the SUV market, was able to create a 3/4-ton SUV utilizing many existing components from the SuperDuty line of pickup trucks.
While driving your Excursion over a series of bumps, the rear axle actually moves, or tilts, fore and aft a small amount, and the reverberation you feel is from the leaf springs attempting to normalize themselves -- attempting to return the axle to its normal position.
When the Excursion is driven over an abnormality in the road surface that affects only the left or right-side wheels, the leaf springs allow axle-wrap to occur, but this time the axle-wrap is not equal from side to side (as it is under acceleration or braking).

The Ford Excursion is not only the largest SUV that the Ford Motor Company has ever manufactured but also the largest so far in all of America.
Because of its large size, the Ford Excursion has been an easy pick for bad reviews and destructive criticisms that have brought down the sales of the vehicle since the first year of it was sold.
Ford, however, claimed that its size is rather the advantage than the disadvantage.

PREVIEW: Ford Excursion - Previews - Car and DriverSeptember 1999
No matter what the new Ford Excursion's virtues may be--and there are many--a fair number of folks seem to have a problem seeing past the sheer mass of this thing.
The Excursion is one big bopper, for sure, but the Suburban is no wraith, and it's had the full-size-sport-utility market cornered for about 65 years.
Although it's heftier, the Excursion's dimensions are about the same as those of the largest Ford Econoline van, a vehicle type that has thus far failed to provoke righteous indignation among the self-appointed environmental ombudsmen.

Beneath the Excursion's spacious comfort is Ford's F-series Super Duty pickup chassis, which differs from the standard F-150/250 chassis in its retention of the company's sturdy old twin I-beam swing-arm suspension package on rear-wheel- drive models (leafs and a rigid axle on four-wheelers) and also in its more robust character.
Ford expects the gasoline V-10 to be the volume engine, and since 5.4-liter engines were conspicuous by their absence in the Montana fleet, we focused on the 10-cylinder in a fancy Limited package.
There's a trade-off in ride quality--the Excursion is distinctly firmer than the current Suburbans--but initial compliance takes the hard edge off sharp humps, and in any case we prefer the stronger sense of control that goes with the Ford setup.

Eric Peters on Ford Excursion on National Review Online
Ford Motor Co. let it slip July 31 that the Excursion — at 19-feet and 3.5 tons the biggest SUV ever produced by any automaker — would likely be cancelled after the 2003 model year.
Reviled since its 1999 introduction as the "Ford Valdez," the Excursion was intended to one-up archrival Chevrolet and its Suburban — up till then the largest SUV sold in the United States.
But the Excursion was never a threat to the environment — its big V-10 ran so cleanly, in fact, that the truck qualified under federal regulations as a Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV), producing a planet-friendly 43-percent less smog-forming effluvia than the law demanded.
