For recreation and entertainment, Fairlane boasts several of southeastern Michigan’s major attractions: The Henry Ford, comprising the Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, IMAX Theatre and Ford Rouge Factory Tour; the Ford Community Performing Arts Center; and the Henry Ford Estate.

Ford Fairlane (North American) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ford Fairlane was reintroduced for the 1962 model year to bridge the gap between the compact Ford Falcon and the full-size Galaxie, making it a competitor for GM's A-body 'senior compacts'.
The Fairlane's standard engine was the 170 in³ (2.8 L) six, but as an option, it introduced Ford's new, lightweight V8, initially with a displacement of 221 in³ (3.6 L) and 145 hp (108 kW); a 260 in³ (4.2 L) version was added at mid-year, with an advertised 164 hp.
The Fairlane was revised in 1966, and spawned a Mercury Comet twin.

The 1969 Torino Fairlane Cobra and Talladega
The Cobra model was introduced in the 1969 model year though official known as Cobra through Ford Advertisements, sales brochures and the windows sticker that came on the car many people refer to them as Fairlane Cobras or Torino Cobras.
This is probably due to the fact that the Cobra package, 428 CJ and Ram-Air options, was available on most Fairlane models and all Cobras carry a Fairlane Body Code (main reason for the Fairlane cobra name, but does not explain why one model is not referred to as a Fairlane 500 Cobra!).
Since Ford did not use the name on anything else in 69 it's hard to imagine someone confusing this car with Mustangs as other have noted.

I know Ford is scared to death of the "minivan" name after the Freestar was such a dud, but the Fairlane should have sliding doors.
I just don't understand why Ford makes such a big deal about the Fairlane as the next "people mover", when they already have the Freestyle in the same basic configuration and more than capable of doing everything the Fairlane can do.
I think Ford's problem is that they keep getting rid of vehicles and making new names (granada, taurus, 500, escort, focus, etc...), rather than sticking to a name and just making it better and better (aka camry, corolla, accord, etc).
