Ford Fairmont is a name that has been used for two unrelated models of automobile; one in Australia and one in North America.
The 1978 Ford Fairmont was the first vehicle built off the Ford Fox platform, which would be the basis for a variety of other models, including the Thunderbird, the 1981 to 1982 American Ford Granada, the 1979 to 2004 Mustang, and in 1982, the downsized Lincoln Continental.
The Fairmont replaced the Ford Maverick and at introduction was twinned with the equivalent Mercury Zephyr.

I figured that it would cost less to purchase another Fairmont, as close to identical to mine as possible, for much less than it would cost to repair the '83.
Above is the "replacement" to my baby, a 1982 Ford Fairmont Futura 4 door Sedan.
I purchased her on ebay from a dealer in New Jersey and had her shipped to me. The car cost me $1500 after shipping charges, which is still a lot less than repairs on the '83 would have been.

Didn't know Ford was still using the Fairmont nameplate anymore, but they must be since you have one.
Like I said, the Fairmont was a model Ford had in the USA back in the late 70's to early 80's.
I think Ford did away with the US version when they came out with the Taurus model, but I'm not really a Ford historian so I probably don't have the facts correct.

I drive a 1986 XF Fairmont Ghia, I'm happy with it, it costs very little to repair and it drives like a dream for a 16 year old car.
But the fact of the matter is that apart from the fact it is automatic (although the floorshift manual Ford boxes of the time weren't all that pleasant anyway), I can't think how you could improve upon it.
I own an "87" XF Fairmont that I inherited from my grandparents which at first I was reluctant to take, given my mates constantly told me that a 19 year old shouldn't be seen cruising in one of those tanks.
