The Mazda-platform was ONLY North America - again trying to make cheap, cheap cars- they didnt' adotp the Eureopan designed (and successful) platform.
This model sold well even though the older models sold better, and the Escort was discontinued in 2003 when it was replaced by the Ford Focus.
The American Escort looks suspiciously like the 1991-1994 Australian Ford Laser.

Unlike previous Fords in the North American market, the Pinto and the Escort, no luxury Mercury version is available.
Styling wise, the Focus was equally well received and was a breath of fresh air in a class where some cars were considered dull or unimaginative, although the brash styling ultimately lacked the maturity and class of the ultimately more conservative Mk 4 Volkswagen Golf.
