In 1979, Ford released an all new Mustang.
Ford’s own design engineers and their design documents evidence that locating the fuel tank under the rear seat is a safer location and that there would be less chance of a post collision fuel fed fire if the tanks were moved there.
Indeed, Ford has moved the fuel tank to a safer location in almost all of their modern cars, the only real exceptions being the Mustang and the Crown Victoria (which also has a rear impact fire problem and is the subject of a recent recall to add additional crash shields).

Ford Division ushered in 1958 by unveiling the four-passenger Thunderbird before a group of prominent Americans at a New Year’s Eve Party at the exclusive Thunderbird Golf Club in Palm Springs, Calif. The public introduction was later in January.
Ford's Fox platform was introduced during the '78 model year on the Fairmont compact replacement for the Maverick and a cleaved-down version of the Fox would underpin the Mustang all the way from '79 to 2004.
All Fox platform vehicles were unibody structures with modified MacPherson strut front suspension and a solid rear axle on coil springs.

The Fox platform was used for many Ford cars, starting in '79 for the Mustang and later including the LTD, Thunderbird, Cougar, Capri, and Granada.

When Ford released the current generation of Mustang in 2005 I just knew I had to have one.
Not a Ford person, I was amused to find myself attracted to the newer "retro" style Ford Mustang.
Think Ford is underrating the rear axle it needs, and probably alot of other parts to bring it in at 24K for a sports car.
