Ford Freestar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name change accommodates Ford's strategy to rename their cars to words beginning in F. The Freestar, along with its twin the Mercury Monterey are both made in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.
The Freestar offers a place for up to seven passengers, it features an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission as the part of standard equipment, and is available with two gasoline-powered V6 engines.
Ford will reportedly replace the Freestar with the retro-styled Ford Fairlane three-row sport wagon in 2008.

2005 Ford Freestar - Ratings & Reviews - Ann Job - MSN Autos
Ford officials look for the new van, which received a government five-star crash test rating and is the first at Ford with third-row seats that fold flat into a cavity in the cargo floor, to post better sales than the Windstar has in recent years.
Officially, the Freestar with 4.2-liter V6 is rated by the government at 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.
Ford's use of simply labeled levers and pulls for the third-row seat—they had the numbers 1, 2 and 3 on them to tell me in which order to operate them—meant I was able to put the seat down without having to read the owner's manual.

Ford says the 4.2-liter engine offers more torque than anything in the class, but with a towing rating of 3,500 pounds like every other van, we’re not sure what the point of the boast is. Improvements to the four-speed automatic transmission double the life of the unit, according to Ford.
Loading the Ford Freestar with heavy objects is rather simple thanks to a low liftover height, but taller people are going to need to watch that they don’t bump their heads on the open tailgate – a six-footer cannot clear the corners.
Ford’s parabolic conversation mirror, which allows the driver to see what’s happening in each seat of the van, is standard so that parents can monitor goings-on aft of the first-class cabin, and a DVD-powered rear entertainment system is optionally available to pacify the youngsters on longer trips.
