The Ford Motor Company has owned 25% of Mazda since 1979, and its stake was increased to a 33.4% controlling interest in 1996 when Mazda fell into financial crisis.
Ford has based many of its models on Mazdas, such as the Probe, late model (North American) Escort and Mercury Tracer, and the co-developed Escape/Mazda Tribute.
Ford also used the Mazda models to establish its own retail presence in Japan - the Autorama dealers sold these cars, plus the occasional Ford US and Ford Europe models.

Ford F-150 - American Car Imports UK
Ford admits the new F-150 is bigger, heavier, and more expensive to build, but is also the best-handling, quietest, most car-like full-size pickup truck in the history of the world.
The new Ford F-150 is built around an improved 4.6-liter V8 for the less-expensive models and, for the larger, heavier models, a brand-new 5.4-liter V8 engine with two intake valves and one exhaust valve per cylinder and a new intake port and combustion chamber design.
Ford says that, between these two things, the 5.4-liter engine, which makes a nice, round 300 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque, is also the fuel-stingiest engine the company has ever tested.

 Ford Laser TX-3 Turbo 1980s and '90s. - Drive.com.au
Ford's soon-to-be-released, Focus-based XR5 turbocharged hot-rod has certainly grabbed the attention of the public.
Of much more interest is the model that used a two-door version of the bigger, stronger KF Laser of 1990, which was also the bodyshell used for the last of the locally built Lasers.
Power was a handy-for-the-time 117kW but the Laser's real forte (as it is with many turbo engines) was the way it developed plenty of torque in the middle of its operating range.

 ford laser review
In October 1994, 13 years after starting local assembly of the very popular small car the Laser, Ford closed its Homebush plant in Sydney, choosing instead to source the new KJ series Laser from Japan.
The first of the KJ Lasers (October 94 - December 96), now known as Series I, offered buyers a choice of a four-door sedan or a five-door hatch in two specification levels: LXi or Ghia.
KJ Laser's track record in the reliability stakes generally is good, with defects in used examples more likely the result of normal wear or neglected servicing than any inherent faults.

Ford makes much of the fact that the suspension boasts a low unsprung weight, and the way it contemptuously absorbs broken bitumen and potholes alike is enormously impressive.
The car sits very flat when cornering (Ford suggest that there is only a 2 degree roll angle at 0.5G lateral acceleration!), but it's not hard to push it hard enough that the front (albeit grudgingly) slips sideways.
In its most recent model incarnation, the Laser experienced a major suspension re-design - the front roll centre was lowered 24mm and the rear roll centre lifted by 21mm.
