All MEL engines had wedge shaped combustion chambers formed between a flat head surface and an angle milled block deck, with the piston top determining the compression ratio and combustion chamber shape.
The least-common MEL engine was the 410 in³ (6.7 L) Bore was lower at 4.2 in (106.7 mm).
The 430 was replaced by the 462 in³ (7.6 L) engine in 1966.

Mel drove mostly V860s but graduated to Offies later in his career.  He drove at Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Salem, Eugene, Yakima, Ellensburg, Spokane, Kenniwick and in Canada at Cloverdale, Burnaby and Ladner B.C. Mel as a "rookie" in his first own car, a V860.
Mel was inducted into the Golden Wheels Hall of Fame in October 2002 along with  Bob McLees and Harry Stryker Snr.for their contribution to American Midget Racing.
Mel goes on to say that he later drove # 61 in Canada for one night only - the steering wheel came off while leading the B Main, he jumped the low rail and ended up with his front wheels on the roof of the Ladies Rest Room.

A competitor without the southeast speedways' sealed crate engine will have the option to rent, borrow, or buy (depending on the speedway the competitor is attempting to race at) a sealed crate engine from that speedway.
All crate engines must run a Mel's Ignition, an H.E.I. type ignition with an internal built-in rev limiter (maximum allowed is 6500 RPM) and the coil must be mounted on the engine side of firewall as close as possible.
If during technical inspection, at any time, a racer's crate engine is found to have been altered, tampered with, opened, resealed, or wrong for any reason what so ever (and there is no explanation of it in the master database), the engine is illegal.
