It was introduced in 1906 as a successor to the Models A, C and F as the company's inexpensive entry-level line.
The Model R was an uplevel trim of the Model N with a larger body and wheels covered by full cycle fenders.
An oil lamp was also added, and $150 separated the Model R from the base $600 Model N. The Model R was only produced in 1907, from April through October, and 2500 were sold.

For some reason, the follow-up was the Ford Model A and not the Model U. In the international poll for the award of the world's most influential car of the twentieth century the Ford Model T came first.
The Model T had a unique magneto system which produced only a low voltage which had to be stepped up by a coil; in order to assure easier starting, however, a self-contained dry cell powered system could be manually switched in, then back to magneto for high speed operation.
Model T suspension employed a transversely mounted semi-elliptical spring for each of the front and rear axles, which were "live," i.e., not an independent suspension.

The immediate predicessors of the Model T Ford were the Models N, R and S. The Model N was introduced at the New York Auto Show in January 1906 and deliveries began in July of that same year.
Despite its lack of amenities, the Model N is a delight to drive.
The front axle bears a striking resemblence to that used on the Model N's successor, the Model T. The biggest difference between the two front ends is that the two front spring perches are forged into the Model N's axle body.
