  Ford Prefect
The Ford Prefect was introduced in 1938, built by the Ford plant in Dagenham, Essex[?].
The original Ford Prefect was a slight reworking of the previous year's Ford 7W[?], the first Ford car designed outside of Detroit, Michigan.
The fictional character Ford Prefect in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is named after the Ford Prefect car, although author Douglas Adams later observed that the joke was lost on U.S. audiences who assumed it was a joke on "perfect".

Ford Motor Company of Dagenham designed the 10hp 7W car for launch in March 1937, of a style and design which to which the new motor user was to become very attached, and where Ford parted from vehicle model designation of identifying letters and numbers to name it the 'Prefect'.
Ford replaced it with the Ford 100E Prefect at the end of 1953, but the success of the 10hp Ford Prefect E93A and E493A together with the export variants achieved a production build of 320,336 units.
The fledgling motoring public took the Ford Prefect to heart, the cars served well, enabling those days of 'happy motoring' to be enjoyed by the masses, a true family car, one of the Ford family.

Ford Prefect (character) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ford is a good friend of the main character, an ordinary Earthman named Arthur Dent, who has known him for several years and believes him to be an out of work actor from the town of Guildford in Surrey.
The Ford Prefect was, in fact, a line of inexpensive automobiles manufactured in the United Kingdom in the 1950s.
For the listener/reader/viewer, Ford is the source of much explanation of the weird universe that Arthur finds himself in; for example, the importance of knowing where your towel is, sticking a fish in your ear, and why the greatest cooks in the universe cook such bad food on Vogon spaceships.

Ford Prefect’s original name is only pronounceable in an obscure Betelgeusian dialect, now virtually extinct since the Great Collapsing Hrung Disaster.
Ford’s father was the only man on the entire planet to survive the Great Collapsing Hrung Disaster, after which he came to live on Betelgeuse Five where he both fathered and uncled Ford; in memory of his now dead race he christened him in the ancient Praxibetel tongue.

In other Ford Prefect-related trivia, the American Heritage Dictionary defines “prefect” as a high administrative official, Americans have been known to dyslexically refer to it as the “Ford Perfect”, and the French translations of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy change the character’s name to “Ford Escort”.
