Wikipedia - Ford Yamaha V8 Engine
It was at 3.4 L and continued many of the traits of the SHO V6, including the aluminum cylinder heads (the V6 SHO engine has an iron block), 4-valve per cylinder DOHC design, and a variable length intake manifold.
The SHO V8's valve train was an "interference" design, one that is shared by many engines built today, meaning that the piston will collide with the valves if the camshaft or timing chain fails.
The engine is a 4.4 L aluminum DOHC V8 which produces 311 hp (232 kW) and 325 ft·lbf (441 N·m).

 Ford Taurus - Wikicars
Ford took a huge gamble in basing its bread and butter car on the 1984 Audi 5000, which in turn was patterned on the radical 1975 Citroën CX.
A 3.2 L version of the Ford SHO V6 engine was introduced for automatic-equipped SHOs, which still had 220 hp (164 kW), but now boasted 215 ft·lbf (292 N·m), a 15 ft·lbf (20.3 N·m) increase over the 3.0 L version.
The V8 in the SHO model (produced from 1996 to 1999), was very impressive, but increased curb weight and the lack of a manual transmission option meant the new SHO lacked the acceleration of the previous generation.

tBlog - Ford SHO V6 engine
The SHO engines share a common bellhousing pattern with the following Ford engines: the 2.3/2.5L FWD HSC I4, the 3.0L FWD/RWD Vulcan V6, and the 3.8 FWD Canadian Essex V6.
The SHO V6 was a high-tech design when it bowed in 1989 at 3.0L (2986cc).
This new engine, while retaining the same 80mm stroke of its 3.0L brother, sported a larger 92mm bore that helped raise output to 220bhp (164 kW) and 215lb/ft of torque (298 Nm) at the flywheel.

 Transporteon.com -- Ford Taurus
The Ford Taurus is a midsize car sold by the Ford Motor Company in North America as a sedan and station wagon.
Note that the best-selling vehicle remained the Ford F-150 during this period, and that a number of other vehicles also ranked higher then the Taurus, because the vehicle category defined as a 'car' is not the best-selling type.
Ford hoped the radical redesign would lead to the same success it had had with the 1986 Taurus.

Magnecor Race Wires: Ford Taurus SHO technical bulletin
SHO 3.0 and 3.2 engines are prone to moisture and oil accumulating over spark plugs and the bottom of ignition wire spark plug connectors situated in deep un-drained holes passing through the engine’s valve covers.
SHO spark plug connector top seals (the rectangular covers that fit over the spark plug tunnels), like the seals on connectors used on many other engines using extended connectors, need to be vented, and appear to do little to cope with the amount of moisture this engine accumulates in its spark plug holes.
Although SHOs are not the only vehicles which suffer driveability problems from moisture accumulating in deep un-drained spark plug holes, SHO owners are disadvantaged by the design of the engine which places the ignition wires in locations that can't be reached without removing and replacing the intake manifold.

The base engine for all except the LX was a four cylinder of 2.5 liters and 90 horsepower.
And the SHO had some additional questionable design elements, such as a small, misshapen rear spoiler stuck on the decklid that was so much narrower than the Taurus that it looked like it belonged on a much smaller car.
Engine engineering was the hot topic for 1997 as a multitude of changes occurred for the 3.0-liter V6.

 The History of FORD Taurus
Ford took a huge gamble in basing its bread and butter car on the 1984 Audi 5000, which in turn was patterned on the radical 1975 Citroen CX.
For 1986, the engines were a 90hp (67kW) 2.5L 4-cylinder found in the MT-5 and L models or a new 140hp (104kW) 3.0L Vulcan V6, optional on the L and standard on the GL and LX models.
The V8 in the SHO model (produced from 1996 to 1999), was very impressive, but lacked the acceleration and power of the previous DOHC 3.0L V6 SHO.

 Carpages.ca - 1992 - 1995 Ford Taurus
Despite complaints that Ford didn't go far enough in its redesign, this 1992 Ford Taurus 4 Dr LX sedan is quite modern in appearance compared to the previous generation.
Ford had lowered the 1992 car's drag coefficient (Cd) from the 0.33 rating of the previous model to a slightly slipperier 0.32, improving wind noise inside the cabin.
Ford managed to enhance the car's handling, due to a new wheel and tire package, recalibrated power speed-sensitive power steering and more structural rigidity in the unibody design.

FordMuscle Webmagazine: SHO n' Tell Taurus SHO
The story that is most widely accepted among SHO owners is that Ford was developing a sports car in the early to mid-80's to compete with the Fiero, MR2, RX7, and 240/280/Z cars.
The Yamaha V6 and the SHO made the cover of all enthusiast magazines in 1988 and occupied slots on many "10 Best" lists for at least the first few model years.
There were significant changes that affected the SHO's personality along the way, most notably being the availability of an automatic in 1993, the replacement of the 3.0L V6 with a 3.4L V8 in 1996, and the discontinuation of the 5-speed manual in 1996.

Fast Fords - Then & Now : Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III and Ford Taurus SHO
It was exactly 100 years ago that the first "fast Ford" was introduced, a 2-cylinder 26 horsepower machine that won its first race in 1901 with Henry Ford at the wheel.
One of the main features of both cars was the "shaker" air intake that was bolted to the engine but protruded from the hood, so named because of its tendency to shake even when the car was at idle.
The exterior differences separating the SHO from ordinary Taurii are minor and few, keeping the go-fast identity of the car a complete mystery from most motorists.

The 4.4 L engine was likely to find its way to Lincoln's new D3-based models in 2008 and beyond with production beginning in Lima, Ohio.
The engine was used in the 2006 Lincoln MKS concept car because of the engine's V6-like 60 degree V angled cylinder banks; V8 engines usually have a 90 degree V. However, it was revealed in mid-August, 2006, that Ford's Way Forward plan would not allow the low-volume engine to go forward.

 1997 Ford Taurus SHO Comments - Carsurvey.org
The first reason is that the V8 in the SHO does not have 32 valves, it has 24, also its not a "4.3L" V8 those engines are 4.6L's.
NO Taurus SHO ever came from the factory with a 5.0, so either someone figured out somehow to get one in there, or, (much much more likely) someone transferred some 5.0 logos from an old Mustang GT to this Taurus, to convince some sucker (you, perhaps?) that it has a 5.0--one of a kind, hahaha.
So, my buddie's 1991 ford mustang has the 5.0L v-8 in it, and yesterday when we were changing the oil I couldnt help, but notice that the engine in this mustang looks the EXACT same as the 5.0 engine in my Taurus, which is a 1993.
