Sigmund's Ford Escort RS Cosworth page
When the required 5000 examples of the three door Sierra RS Cosworth was produced Ford felt that they needed a car with the same amount of power but with more comfort and ability to carry the family too.
Ford knew they had a great engine in the YBG that sat in the the Sierra Saphire, so Ford's master plan was to simply put the engine, drivetrain and suspension of the Sierra Saphire 4wd into a modified and strengthened Escort shell.
But, to Ford's dismay I suppose, it was simply not possible so a new chassis and body had to be built specifically for the Escort RS Cosworth.

Articles - Ford Sierra   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
The Sierra was Ford's answer to the similar-sized Vauxhall Cavalier, which had been launched a year earlier with front-wheel drive and a hatchback bodystyle.
The Ford Cortina had only come in saloon and estate bodystyles but after the switch to the Sierra, combined with the redesign of the Ford Escort to Mark III level in 1980, and the introduction of the Ford Granada Mark III in 1985, Ford had changed its saloon-based line-up into a hatchback-based one.
Ford found that customers were more attached to the idea of a saloon than they had expected, and this was further addressed in 1987 by the saloon version of the Sierra.

The Ford Sierra Cosworth 4WD front Quaife ATB differential is proven in circuit and drag racing, rallying and road use, and is produced from Corus steel billets, and is CAD designed and CNC machined, then inspected to ISO 9001 standards.

The original avant-garde Sierra hatchback of 1982 was, initially, not received well by a buying public more used to the thoroughly conventional Cortina.
However, appearance can be deceptive, because although the styling and driver focused interior were both up to the minute designs, much lauded by the critics of the day, they hid a rather more prosaic rear drive machine that built on the Cortina's legacy.
Familiarity and a re-style, which made the car look a little less like it was on the set of 'Space 1999', meant it sold strongly in the later part of its ten year life.

Look at the Wheels on That: Ford Sierra RS Cosworth - Auto Trader UK — Features - News and Reviews Hub

But in pride of place was the framed picture of a Sierra RS Cosworth, complete with the kind of lightening bolt background graphics that were de rigeur at the time.
The Cossie cemented Ford's position as the most successful British Touring Car team in history, duelling with Rover Vitesses and BMW M3s in the legendary races of the late 80s.
