Ford Sigma engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ford Sigma is a small straight-4 automobile engine sold by Ford Motor Company as the Zetec-SE and by Mazda as the MZI.
Intended for Ford's smaller models, it was intended to replace the older HCS and smaller capacity CVH units.
It's also a much smaller engine than the SE version, which allowed it to be installed on the Ford Ka, replacing the Endura-E engine which by that time was considered underpowered and outdated.

Ford CVH Engine Overview   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
The CVH (Compound Valve angle Hemispherical combustion chamber) engine was introduced by Ford in 1980 in the third generation Ford Escort.
Engines were built in the Dearborn Engine Plant for the North American market, and in Ford's then-new engine plant in Bridgend in Wales for the European market.
The engine was originally conceived in 1974 and is unique in terms of its valves mounted at a compound angle, which allows for a hemispherical combustion chamber shape without using a more expensive twin camshaft arrangement.

It was codenamed as the "Zeta" engine before Italian car maker Lancia threatened to sue Ford for trademark infringement as it already owned the name.
Later versions of the engine are known as the Zetec-E. The main difference is a two piece crankcase which helps damp out noise and vibration.
It's also a much smaller engine than the SE version, which allowed it to be then installed on the Ford Ka, replacing the weak Endura-E engine by the time.

Ford factory support and a new engine for British FF? - ApexSpeed
The British Formula Ford championship will receive assistance from Ford of Europe from next season, which could lead to the creation of a new formula to be launched in 2006.
One possibility could be to change from the unfavourable Zetec 1800cc unit and revert to 1600cc engines, with either Ford's increasingly popular Duratec or Sigma powerplants.
The move is understood to be as a result of Ford of Europe's chairman Lewis Booth attempting to stave off the increasing possibility that the category, which has run continuously since its inception in 1967, would not continue in Britain next season.
