  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Ford Taurus
The fourth generation Ford Taurus is basically the same car given a mild appearance redesign to avoid the controversies created by the oval design of the previous generation.
Ford workers came into the room, which was decorated in space-age decor, holding cups shaped like flying saucers, and the Taurus and Sable were sitting behind a curtain, their outlines silhouetting.
Ford also gave the Taurus what they called a 'smarter appointed interior', which offered such luxuries as automatic climate control (an option for the LX and, later, SE; standard on SHO models) and a center console was available for people who didn't want the front bench seat.

 Ford Taurus History
Unlike its Japanese competition, the Taurus could seat six (or even up to eight in the wagon) as it was available with either a bench seat or bucket seats up front, as opposed to the strictly bucket arrangements in the Accord and Camry.
As with the Taurus, the grille was facelifted (although the Sable's taillights remained the same as before) and second-generation airbags came on line.
And interiors on both the Taurus and Sable were updated with new fabrics, larger door-release levers and hard map pockets (which replaced the former net pockets) in the doors.

 Ford Taurus, R.I.P. - Forbes.com
With the gasoline shortages and economic woes of the 1970s still bearing on the national psyche, the Taurus, which was released in 1985, became the car that was going run over the foreign competition; the one that would bring the American automobile back to the forefront of the industry.
The Taurus was never hip per say (some critics called it a "jelly bean" or a "flying potato" at the time).
By 1997, however, a year after the Taurus was re-modeled, the Toyota (nyse: TM - news - people) Camry, unseated it, claiming the top spot amongst U.S. consumers.

The Showroom of Automotive History:1986 Taurus
The Ford Taurus, (and its essentially similar cousin, the Mercury Sable), is probably one of the two most significant American automobiles of the 1980s (the other is the Chrysler Corp. minivan).
By 1980, Ford was suffering from the combined effects of higher gas prices, foreign competition, government regulation, internal strife (the feud between Henry Ford II and Lee Iacocca that resulted in Iacocca's firing), and its own products' dated design and poor reliability.
Ford also "benchmarked" the car, identifying competitive cars with the best features and trying to equal or improve on them in the Taurus.

  Ford Taurus - Wikicars
Ford took a huge gamble in basing its bread and butter car on the 1984 Audi 5000, which in turn was patterned on the radical 1975 Citroën CX.
This also gave the Taurus what Ford called a "smarter appointed interior", which offered such luxuries as automatic climate control (an option for the LX and, later, SE; standard on SHO models), and a center console was made available for people who didn't want the Taurus' front bench seat.
Ford's new CEO Alan Mulally determined that Ford's strategy to redesignate new cars in the lineup with new names beginning with the letter F, as in Ford Focus, Ford Fusion, and Ford Freestyle, was not a good marketing move, as some of the renamed cars had highly recognizeable iconic names.

Ford Taurus review, what to look for buying a used Ford Taurus, maintenance tips and more.
Introduced in 1985, Ford Taurus held the title of the best selling passenger car in US from 1992 to 1996, although Toyota Camry and Honda Accord led this category since then.
The 2000-2006 Taurus might not offer that high-quality interior as in the Honda Accord or Camry's smooth ride, but it's very comfortable, and it's a lot cheaper; 3-4 years old Taurus goes for 4000-5000 US cheaper than Camry or Accord of the same age.
Compared to the previous generations, the 2000-2006 Taurus is more reliable and doesn't have that many problems; however, an extended warranty might be still a good idea to protect yourself from unexpected problems.
