It was supposed to replace the Ford Fairlane in the mid-size car line-up but the latter was still sold by Ford until 1971.
Upon introduction, the Ford Torino was available in a number of body styles: two-door fastback hardtop, four-door sedan, four-door station wagon, and two-door convertible.
The popularity of the Ford Torino began to decline in the 1970s as high emission controls and fuel economy standards took its toll on the car.

Still a sports sedan, the first Torino was larger in size than the previous year Fairlane and incorporated a whole new roof line in the fastback as well as the new two door hardtop, also called a two door formal roof.
The Torino was built from the start with plenty of power and comfort with standard equipment v-8 engines from the small block 302, to the big block 390 and 428 Cobra Jet introduced in 1969.
The Ford Torino offered many choices and was built Ford tough to cater to a variety of buyers from the family wagon to the ferocious cobra performance models.

Ford Torino Talladega - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Named after the Talladega Superspeedway racetrack in Alabama, it was a special racing version of the Ford Torino produced specifically to make Ford competitive in NASCAR racing, and was sold to the public only because homologation rules required a certain number of sales to the public.
Unusually, Ford homologated the engine separately from the car it was to race in; production Talladegas received the Ford 428 Cobra Jet, which while powerful was not intended as a racing engine, while the racing engines were installed in the limited-production Ford Mustang Boss 429.
Today, a Torino Talladega is a fairly collectible car, although for some reason their values have not risen nearly as high as the Mopar "aero cars" - possibly the sheer outrageousness of the Charger Daytona and Superbird, with their huge rear wings, have eclipsed the far more subtle Torino Talladega.

According to Huntley, Torino GT owners commonly removed the air conditioning parts both for weight reduction on the dragstrip (the whole unit weighs at least 100 pounds) and because the hoses commonly blew, forcing expensive repairs.
While cloning a Torino GT is possible with the GT-specific pieces in reproduction, both Huntley and Craig said changing the VIN, which will give the car away immediately, isn't very easy--Ford stamped it not only on the dash and door tags, but also on the fender aprons, engine and transmission.

The Ford Elite was a "Thunderbird" version of the Torino (in Ford's words) that was intended to appeal to the mid size car customer seeking the Thunderbird luxury at a slightly more affordable price.
The Elite and the Torino are basically the same car - 95% of all parts interchange, with the exception being the sheet metal since it has a different body line (except the trunk lid).
Although in advertising it stood out from the rest of the Torino line, it was still considered a Torino - hence why a title or registration would state "Gran Torino" and the side emblem scripting said "Gran Torino Elite" The Elite made a debut on it's own in 1975-1976.
