Foreign Affairs officials insist funding will remain intact, but cultural groups worry it's on the chopping block as part of $12-million cutback announced this fall.
Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Marie-Christine Lilkoff said there are no planned cutbacks to the program, and noted the Conservative government even added $50 million to the Canada Council for the Arts in its first budget.

As there is no comparable Jewish group within Foreign Affairs Canada — only Muslim interests are given such unique influence over our foreign policy — perhaps we should not be surprised that Canada supports a party whose charter and actions are committed to the destruction of the Jewish presence in the Middle East.
It is time for Canada to acknowledge that the $350 million we have given to the Palestinians since 1993 has only resulted in whitewashing the failures of Palestinian society.
While it is critical of the Dept. of Foreign Affairs for issuing a statement of support for Abbas, it is otherwise positive statement as regards Canada’s position generally.

The most important contribution that could be made to Afghan people was the removal of the Taliban, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Canada, John Manley, said this afternoon at a United Nations Headquarters press conference.
Manley said.  He supported President Bush’s statement.  Terrorists only spoke for themselves.  They undermined the causes they purported to support.  Groups that engaged in terrorist activities risked having their assets seized.  He noted that the military wings of Hamas and Hezbollah had been listed as terrorist organizations.
Manley replied that his Government did not have exactly the same laws but there was a bill before Parliament that gave police authority to detain persons suspected of terrorist activities.
