  SSC Foreign Languages: General FAQ
Many 'foreign' language departments have changed their name to "'modern languages department" (modern languages, as opposed to classical languages, such as Latin or Greek), or to "world languages department' (meaning that they teach major languages of the world).
Every language which extends beyond a small village where everybody knows each other, has a number of "varieties" associated with a region or with a group of people (such as social class) ("variety" is a neutral term that linguists sometimes use instead of "dialect").
For a language to have a standard variety is a good thing since it allows one to communicate more effectively with a wider range of people.

Blair - The Role of English and Other Foreign Languages in Japanese Society (I-TESL-J)
English evokes an image of quality, reliability, (Haarman, 1984a and 1984b) and modern living (Haarman 1986 and Loveday, 1986); French communicates elegance, most often in women's products; Italian brings to mind simple elegance and speed; Spanish projects masculine charm and wild female tenderness; and German suggests tidy, industrious people in a pleasant rural setting.
English and other foreign languages are not just subjects to be studied in school.
Scholars in fields, such as the social sciences and humanities do not utilize foreign languages in publishing their work to the same extent as those in scientific and technological fields and, as a result, find themselves linguistically isolated from their foreign colleagues (Suzuki, 1987).

Every proposal or decision of the combined English and foreign language department, including the initial decision to merge, should be the result of careful study of the aims of language and literature programs and the relation of these aims to statements of institutional values and evaluations of student needs.
Finally, a colleague with language versatility becomes a veritable sign of the validity of those principles on which the combined department is founded: the interrelation of national cultures and literatures and a new spirit of cooperation that has replaced old rivalries between English and other languages in the academy.
A recent study of collaborative efforts by separate English and foreign language departments at a midwestern university reports that the “snobbery and mistrust” that prevailed in each department toward the other was substantially reduced by the institution of a shared minor and by joint publishing and research projects (König and Robbins 28–29).
