Nauru is a 21-square-km (eight-sq-mile) island just south of the equator that has about 12,000 people and one major industry – a phosphate mine that is nearing exhaustion.

Nauru cut its 22-year-old ties with Taiwan in July 2002, a move that was widely viewed as a slap in the face of President Chen by China as it took place on the same day Chen was elected as chairman of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party.
Mr Scotty told the news conference the decision made by his predecessor was wrong and was a detrimental factor in relations with Taiwan.

Nauru was among others who came to the Howard Government's aid taking the mostly Afghan asylum seekers last year in exchange for substantial financial assistance as part of what's become known as the Pacific Solution.
Nauru has revealed that half of the goodwill hasn't arrived as promised but Mr Downer denies that's the case and says Australia will deliver another $7 million in aid in the next financial year.

The election is viewed as a referendum on Mr Chen's independence-leaning policies towards China, which views the democratic island of 23 million people as its own and has refused to deal with Mr Chen unless he accepts Beijing's "one China" policy.
