The Bahamas has been selected by UNEP as one of ten countries to serve as a model for the implementation of the Biodiversity Convention and for the development of pilot studies on biodiversity with the College of The Bahamas.

JOHANNESBURG, 12 Nov 2002 (IRIN) - South Africa is optimistic that an end to land grabs in Zimbabwe, and a shift in focus to compensating farmers and farm workers affected by seizures, will lead to a normalising of Zimbabwe's foreign relations, IRIN has learnt.
The Zimbabwean delegation, led by Foreign Minister Stan Mudenge, gave the assurance that the controversial land acquisition and redistribution element of President Robert Mugabe's fast-track programme had been completed.
Following a ministerial level meeting this week of the re-activated South Africa-Zimbabwe Joint Commission on Cultural, Technical and Scientific Cooperation - which last met in 1996 - it emerged that the Zimbabwe delegation gave "certain assurances" to their counterparts on the execution of the land reform programme.

AFRICA: Mugabe's Zimbabwe - Council on Foreign Relations
Several African countries argued for Zimbabwe's reinstatement, a move British Prime Minister Tony Blair called "defending the indefensible." But recent developments in Zimbabwe--increased farm seizures, expulsion of foreign aid agencies, and violent suppression of dissent, among other events--helped Commonwealth members resist those appeals.
Zimbabwe courts ruled several times that the land reform process was unconstitutional under a provision of the Lancaster House agreement, enshrined in the constitution, that said farmers must be compensated for their land.
On December 3, the IMF, Zimbabwe's most important source of development funding, announced that it is beginning disciplinary "compulsory withdrawal" procedures against Zimbabwe, a strong and rarely applied form of censure that could eventually lead to the country's expulsion from the IMF.

 Zimbabwe Bilateral relations
Zimbabwe is in the midst of a serious economic (decline of GNP in 2003 of 13.5%, inflation in autumn 2004 of over 250%) and social crisis (75% unemployment in the formal sector, 80% of population below the poverty line) largely due to misguided government policy.
Financial Cooperation between Germany and Zimbabwe had focused on the development of the communal lands inhabited by the poorer rural population, encompassing irrigation, the construction of small dams, the maintenance and extension of rural roadways and sanitation.
Owing to political developments in Zimbabwe (increasing human rights problems, lack of a pro-development economic policy and implementation of the land reform without due regard for the rule of law), no further commitments have been made in development cooperation since 2000.

Successive Israeli leaders have been ready to return the entire Golan Heights to Syria, but Syria has stymied agreement by insisting also on a small parcel of land that safeguards Israel’s access to the Sea of Galilee.
Enforcing the isolation of this callow and callous ruler is the least that a humane and pacific foreign policy must aim for.

If Syria cedes Shebaa to Lebanon, then it will be useless as an Israeli bargaining chip against Syria, and Israel doesn't exactly consider it prime development real estate.
With the release of the Hariri report expected on Friday, Lebanon is likely to have a window of considerable leverage in its relations with Syria, and may in fact be able to resolve the long-standing disputes over the border.
Now that Syria is largely out of the picture as a controlling force, HA is keeping its arms by consensus, and part of that consensus is its claim to be fighting a national struggle.

 AllRefer.com - 1UpInfo > Turkey > Foreign Relations
Relations between Turkey and Bulgaria had been badly strained between 1985 and 1989 as a result of Bulgaria's campaign of forcibly assimilating its Turkish minority, estimated at 900,000 and comprising approximately 10 percent of the country's total popul ation.
Turkey began reevaluating its foreign policy in 1991, when the United States-led war against Iraq and the collapse of the Soviet Union totally upset patterns of international relations that had been relatively consistent for more than forty years.
For Turkey the practical consequence of the Soviet Union's demise was the replacement of one large, powerful, and generally predictable neighbor with five smaller near neighbors characterized by domestic instability and troubling foreign policies.
