Rolling Stone : Foreigner's Double Vision: Foreigner
The Nineties were trying times for Foreigner, even before the tumor was found in the middle of lead singer Lou Gramm's head.
Jones recruited a new singer and cut a back-to-basics Foreigner album, Unusual Heat, while Gramm, having tasted solo success with two albums in the late Eighties, released a sharp, albeit not-quite-right for the times, pop-metal album with his new band, Shadow King.
And though Gramm and Jones remain committed to finishing a new Foreigner album (their shooting for next spring), both are happy to see their successful if often underrated history tended to with proper respect.

Foreigner's leader from the beginning has been British guitarist Mick Jones, who first broke into the music biz as a "hired gun" of sorts, appearing on recordings by George Harrison and Peter Frampton, and as part of a later-day version of hard rockers Spooky Tooth.
Foreigner's self-titled debut was issued in 1977 and became an immediate hit on the strength of the hit singles "Feels Like the First Time," "Long, Long Way From Home," and the aforementioned "Cold As Ice," as the album would eventually go platinum five times over.
While the album was another big seller and turned out to be their most straight-ahead musically, both Gramm and Jones felt that the album failed to break any new ground, something that they sought to correct on their next album.

The album of 10 songs (eight of which were co-written with Turgon) was a foray into a much rougher and less polished rock and roll style than Gramm was used to seeing while in Foreigner.
Foreigner at this point was putting a lot of pressure on Gramm to abandon the tour to support Ready Or Not, and return to the studio to finish off Inside Information, so that they could tour in support of it.

After establishing themselves as a reliable FM Album Rock with their first three albums, Foreigner was focused on starting off the 1980's with a grand slam of an album.
A lyrical standout comes from the album's biggest hit, "Juke Box Hero" which chronicles the rise to stardom of a young boy who "stands in the rain" outside the building from which his favorite band is playing.
The formula was the same on all of their albums except 4 made use of the popular synthesizers of the time period more than their 70's releases.

Because this album was a follow up to the monster album "Foreigner 4", and because of some of the weaker songs on the album, the album has been maligned by a number of reviewers and critics.
If Foreigner had not released "4", it may well be that some fans would have regarded this album as their best, or one of their best.

What should be kept in mind, however, is that Stevens's peers in 1973 were acts like Jethro Tull and Yes that were penetrating the top of the charts and selling millions of records while creating elaborate musical suites, and that they in turn were taking their cue from Abbey Road and Tommy.
Actually, the suite is full of compelling melodic sections and typically emotive singing that could have made for an album side's worth of terrific four-minute Cat Stevens songs if only he had composed them that way.
The decline seemed more extreme, though, because Foreigner clearly was intended to be better than its predecessors.

Between 1970 and 1972, Cat Stevens recorded four albums in the same manner, using the same producer and many of the same musicians, painting the album covers, and assigning the records ponderous titles.
But the album's second side, featuring the Top 40 hit "The Hurt," demonstrates that, even in the four-minute range, his songwriting and arranging were becoming overly busy.
On the whole, Foreigner marked a slight fall-off in quality from Catch Bull at Four, which itself had marked a slight fall-off from Teaser and the Firecat.
