Topic: Foreknowledge

In the News (Tue 29 Dec 09)

Foreknow; Foreknowledge (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia) :: Bible Tools
Jesus asserts a foreknowledge by God of that which is hidden from the Son (Mark 13:32), and James asserts that all God's works are foreknown by Him (Acts 15:18).
Since, therefore, the Divine foreknowledge is quite as inconsistent with this view of freedom as is the Divine foreordination, the view of those who regard God as a mere onlooker on the course of future events which are supposed to be entirely independent of His purpose and control, does not help matters in the least.
While, therefore, the foreknowledge of God in the sense of prescience is asserted in the New Testament, this is not the meaning of the term when used to translate the Greek words proginoskein and prognosis.

C.D. COLE VOLUME #1- THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD
The word foreknowledge as used in the Bible can hardly be made to refer to a quality or attribute of the Divine nature.
The word "foreknowledge" is not in the Old Testament, but the word "know" occurs often, and frequently means to love or choose or ordain.
To be exact and critical, the writer believes that, although divine foreknowledge is close akin to and associated with such words as election, predestination, and foreordination, it has a distinct meaning of its own.

The primary is "foreknowledge", the secondary is "foreordination".
To discover which of these two viewpoints, foreknowledge or Election, is the correct one, we need only to ask ourselves which of these two seems to be the least "fair", and we have the correct one.
Foreknowledge assumes that man's will is free with regard to his ability to accept Christ and submit to God's law.

 The Foreknowledge of God
It is impossible to distinguish between the foreknowledge of God with reference to such a plan of redemption and the will that originated it.
I submit that God can and does possess foreknowledge and that this foreknowledge does not preclude or negate the freedom of choice on the part of man. In the first place, God's foreknowledge is plainly set forth in the scriptures.
Foreknowledge does not equate to Calvinism, but foreknowledge is a biblical teaching.

Foreknow, Foreknowledge - International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
Nothing future is hidden from Yahweh (Isaiah 41:22; 42:9; 43:9-13; 44:6-8; 46:10; Daniel 2:22; Amos 3:7), and this foreknowledge embraces the entire course of man's life (Psalms 31:15 (Hebrew 16); Psalms 39:5 (Hebrew 6); Psalms 139:4-6,16; Job 14:5).
These passages from Isa show that it is from the occurrence of events in accordance with Yahweh's prediction that the Prophet will prove his foreknowledge; and that in contrast with the worshippers of idols which are taken by surprise, Israel is warned of the future by the omniscient Yahweh.

DOCTRINE OF FOREKNOWLEDGE, ELECTION, AND PREDESTINATION
Foreknowledge is God's eternal foresight by which He anticipated all who would be positive and believe in Christ (Rom.8:29 "For whom He foreknew, He also predestined"; 11:2 "God has not rejected His people [Israel] whom He foreknew").
Foreknowledge enables God to anticipate all things and initiate a perfect, foolproof plan for the objects of His foreknowledge, election and predestination.
Foreknowledge logically preceded election and predestination, as the natural reading of Rom.8:29,30 suggests (we recognize that since God is eternal, these functions always were before or with Him, but his plan is explained to us in sequential terms to communicate to us; see also 1Pet.1:1,2).

How Does God Know the Future?
The predictive model of divine foreknowledge holds that God knows the future by prediction, by calculating the way that the world is going to be on the basis of the way that the world is now.
An alternative defense of divine foreknowledge, however, is to reject the predictive model of divine foreknowledge and instead advance an observational model.
On the observational model of divine foreknowledge, it doesn’t matter whether or not determinism is true, because God’s knowledge of the future is based not on predicting how the world will be in the future but on seeing how the world is in the future.

There is an important disanalogy between a Frankfurt case and infallible foreknowledge that supports the intuition that an agent retains alternate possibilities even when her act is infallibly foreknown.
These theorists reject divine timelessness and immutability, along with infallible foreknowledge, arguing that not only should foreknowledge be rejected because of its fatalist consequences, the view of a God who takes risks is more faithful to Scripture than the classical notion of an essentially omniscient and foreknowing deity.

The Foreknowledge of GOD  by AW Pink
There are two things concerning the Foreknowledge of God about which many are in ignorance: the meaning of the term, its Scriptural scope.
False theology makes God's foreknowledge of our believing the cause of His election to salvation; whereas, God's election is the cause, and our believing in Christ is the effect.
The fact is that foreknowledge is never used in Scripture in connection with events or actions; instead, it always has reference to persons.

 Foreknowledge of God
Divine foreknowledge is the knowledge of a Heavenly Father, not knowledge of a metaphysical abstraction.
Anyone seeking to understand divine foreknowledge must begin by recognizing that scripture does not directly address the question as it has been formulated in philosophy and theology, where the emphasis is on the content and logic of knowledge.
Maimonides argues that though it is logically impossible for human foreknowledge of one's actions to be compatible with freedom, God's foreknowledge, which is of a different and mysterious kind, is compatible with freedom.

 God's Foreknowledge and Free-Will
That may be necessary in regard of God’s foreknowledge, which is merely accidental in regard of the natural disposition of the immediate causes which do actually produce it; contingent in its own nature, and in regard of us, but fixed in the knowledge of God.
Indeed, if we deny God’s foreknowledge of the voluntary actions of men, we must strike ourselves off from the belief of scripture predictions that yet remain unaccomplished, and will be brought about by the voluntary engagements of men, as the ruin of antichrist, andc.
And thus the foreknowledge of God takes not away the liberty of man’s will, no more than a foreknowledge that we have of any man’s actions takes away his liberty.

The argument from foreknowledge is an argument that divine omniscience, or more specifically divine foreknowledge, is inconsistent with human freedom.

The Arminian has no alternative but to deny the foreknowledge of God - and then he has only a limited, ignorant, finite God who in reality is not God at all in the true sense of that word.

Directed to Christians experiencing persecution because of their faith in Jesus, 1 Peter's reference to the foreknowledge of God was intended to bring assurance that their existence is part of God's will and plan and that they have a sure and certain hope that is not tied to changing circumstances or events.

 Exegetical Study of God’s Foreknowledge
Traditionally, the debate over the meaning of God’s foreknowledge is a consequence of the debate between Calvinists and Arminians over predestination, particularly as it relates to the doctrine of election.
In Biblical usage, the two concepts [foreknowledge and predestination] are sequential only in that foreknowledge points to initiating cause, namely, God’s love in His choice, while predestination points to the willing act which determines the destiny or outcome.
It should be noted that if certainty of outcome is inconsistent with freedom, divine foreknowledge, as the Arminian understands that term, presents as much difficulty for human freedom as does divine foreordination.

Now what has just been said on "flesh," the "world," immortality, applies with equal force to the terms know and "foreknow." Instead of imagining that these words signify no more than a simple cognition, the different passages in which they occur require to be carefully weighed.
