Literary Journalism: Franklin on Foreshadowing (From Writer-L, 9/29/05)
In the case of foreshadowing, the first issue is that you have to think of your readers' levels of mind.
However, the audience should, at least on some level be able to recognize foreshadowing, and whilst reading think to themselves, "the writer has digressed into a whole other topic, and goes into quite a lot of detail...hmm...perhaps this has significance?" and thus keep those details in the back of their mind.
The use of foreshadowing is probably meant to grab the attention of your subconcious and the writer slowly draws your focus on a likelihood of the story's direction.
