Forest County consists geologically of a region of the Allegheny Plateau drained by the Allegheny and Clarion rivers, Tionesta Creek and smaller tributaries of these rivers Tionesta Dam impounds the largest reservoir lake in the county, with a purpose of flood control.
The county was formed in 1848, and Tionesta is the county seat.
County demographics are somewhat skewed, with 20% of the population over 65 years old, and almost 24% under 18 (1990 census).

 Paleoindian Research in Western Pennsylvania
This region of the central Allegheny River (Ohio River) basin of northwestern Pennsylvania is unglaciated and is included in the Pittsburgh Low Plateau section of the Appalachian Plateaus province (Berg 1980).
Prehistoric colluvial debris flows are numerous in the non-glaciated portion of northwestern Pennsylvania, due to increased rates of mechanical weathering and subsequent slope movement (Pomeroy 1983).
In nearby Venango County, Fogelman and Lantz (2006:217) documented three fluted points, two of which are Eastern Clovis/Gainey and one of which is a Crowfield type.

The formations in this county are nearly horizontal, the average dip being less than common railway gradients; and the surface being almost a continuous forest, presents few exposures even of a broken and uncertain character; while the oil wells show that the beds and groups of beds vary in thickness in every direction.
Coal-openings are more numerous near Marienville in Jenks township than elsewhere, but even trial pits have been gradually discontinued owing to the abundance of wood and the general use bore-hole gas for light and fuel.
