  Types of Forest
Nevertheless, cloud forest trees are heavily burdened with epiphytes that thrive with the abundance of moisture from the passing fog.
Heath forests, also known as flwater or caatinga forests, are drained by flwater rivers and are found primarily in the Amazon Basin (the Rio Negro drainage), but also in parts of Asia.
Unfortunately, mangrove forests are some of the most threatened ecosystems on the planet because of their proximity to the ocean (prime resort/development property) and the tendency to see them as useless swamps full of all sorts of threatening creatures.

The New Forest history: Pre-Norman - 1189   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
In this context, a Forest is land subject to special laws designed to protect deer and other animals of the hunt; the king reserved the right to hunt for himself, and those he authorised.
Forest Law was a distinct legal system with its own courts and officers - the sole aim was to preserve the venison and vert (green undergrowth for feeding the venison) for the King's pleasure.
William Rufus is supposed to have increased the severity of penalties for flouting Forest Law - death and mutilation apparently the penalties for interference with the King's deer.

GLOBAL FOREST FIRE ASSESSMENT 1990-2000 - FRA WP 55
Subsequently, forest fires continued to occur in Malaysia but the extent was less and mainly located in secondary conversion forests, forest plantations and degraded forests.
Forest areas affected by fire, be it in the Permanent Reserved Forest or state-owned land, should be rehabilitated quickly to prevent further degradation of the area through soil erosion and colonisation of pioneers and weeds.
The episodes of forest fires and haze in the last two decades, namely in 1982/83, 1990, 1991, 1994 and 1997/98 should serve as useful lessons to be more cautious and undertake all efforts to ensure that we are prepared in the future.

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Sundaland heath forests (IM0161)
The Sundaland Heath Forests [IM0161], known in Indonesia as kerangas (or land too poor for rice growing once cleared, in the Iban language) foster the growth of specialist plants such as the carnivorous pitcher plant Nepenthes, sundews Drosera, and bladderwort Utricularia.
This quest for land is exploiting the nutritionally impoverished soils of the heath forests.
It is estimated that the heath forests of Sarawak and Brunei contain 849 tree species, and, along with the Nabawan heath forests of Sabah, these forests are richer in plant species and endemics than elsewhere in the ecoregion (WWF and IUCN 1995).

Activated carbon was used to alleviate the effects of allelochemicals on tree seedlings planted in the forest and in the barrens.
Average daily solar irradiation on the barrens and forest plots was measured using a Solar Pathfinder (Pleasantville, TN), and it was determined that the barrens plots received approximately five times the energy from direct sunlight as the forest plots.
Activated carbon treatment in the forest did not cause a decrease of mortality or increase of growth ratio for any species, showing that the results obtained for the barrens are the result of factors particular to that community type and not a general response to activated carbon.

 Unasylva - Vol. 4, No. 3 - Forest-soil research in Finland
The key subjects for forest soil research are phenomena which, in one way or another, affect the fertility of the soil: what soil properties determine the fertility, how permanent this fertility is by nature, and what the possibilities are for improving the productivity of poor soils.
For example, the competition between forest and heath, which is a problem in Denmark and northwest Germany, does not occur in Finland; neither does competition between forest and steppe, or between forest and prairie.
Moreover, the forest soils in Finland are rich in mineral nutrients and have not been exhausted by such practices as the Central European use of forest litter, for example.

Fresh and herb-rich upland forest sites in the northwestern part of the central boreal vegetation zone in Finland were studied with respect to vegetation structure and vegetation–environment relationships (soil, stand characteristics).
Two fresh heath vegetation data sets, one from the northern boreal zone and the other from the central boreal zone, were compared with the data of this study using multivariate methods.
The variation in heath forest vegetation within the climatically uniform area was mainly determined by the fertility of the soil (in this case primarily Ca and Mg) and the stage of stand development.
