The name of the park, and its major reason for creation, is the rich collection of petrified wood found mainly in the south portion of the park.
Similar to the Roosevelt elk in Redwood National Park, these animals teetered on the brink of extinction early in the century.
The park features a number of types birds, not the least of which is the raven which is common here and in other portions of northern Arizona.

Parking is available in both locations and the park can be entered by way of several residental streets on the east and west.
Lots of parking from different locations, so pick wisely, as I entered the trails from the park, I passed two side streets that had easy access to the trail system.

Remnants of giant trees from ancient forests of the Triassic Period over 200 million years old, these logs turned from wood to rock after the trees were buried under layers of sand and silt.
Most of the petrified logs in the park were from trees of the variety Araucarioxylon, large trees which reached 100 feet in height and 6-8 feet in diameter.
In the southern section of the park lies the Giant Logs and Rainbow Forest collections of petrified wood.

The park was named for Lewis F. Linn, the U.S. Senator from Missouri from 1834 until his death in 1843, who was the author and advocate of the Donation Land Act which gave free land to settlers in the Oregon Territory.

The park boundaries have been extended twice, in 1932 and 1970, to include a large area of the Desert to the north but there are no trails into this region although back-country camping is allowed.
The park road turns due south, crosses the interstate and a branch of the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe railway, and passes through the petrified region.
Rainbow Forest: The area with the most densely-scattered petrified wood is Rainbow Forest, near the south park entrance.
