It was settled (1636) by Puritans under William Pynchon, and was one of the scenes in Shays's Rebellion (1786–87) and a station on the Underground Railroad.

In the Civil War, Springfield was taken by Confederate forces after the local battle (1861) of Wilson's Creek; nearby are the battlefield and a national cemetery.
