The name comes from mediaeval times when the land was part of (An ancient forest in central England; formerly a royal hunting ground; said to be the home of Robin Hood and his merry band) Sherwood Forest that once extended from Nottingham itself up to the north of the county.
The Forest has been part of Nottingham's history and heritage for many years but it is currently under great pressure.

The Deschutes National Forest's largest and most popular ranger district is juggling a 27 percent cut in its recreation budget that's expected to force it to rely more on volunteers.
Keith Clinton, the district's recreation team leader, worries continuing budget cuts could spiral into a slow erosion of resources in the district covering 60 percent of the 1.6 million-acre national forest.
