 Forests of Middle-earth
But when they continued on they discovered that instead of heading north toward the Great East Road as they intended, they were being forced south and east into the valley of the River Withywindle - which was said to be the center of all the queerness in the Old Forest.
From Tom, they learned that the Old Forest had once been part of a vast woodland and that the ancient trees that remained resented the peoples who walked the earth.
Later, in Fangorn Forest, Treebeard told Merry and Pippin that the Old Forest was once part of the great wood that stretched from Fangorn to the Mountains of Lune in the northwest.

Hatrack River Forum: Middle Earth Thread
One thing I disliked about the movies is that they showed Aragorn's character incorrectly, in that they showed him as reluctant to take up the quest and the burden of fighting against Sauron and returning his line to kingship over humans in Middle Earth.
I didn't like Cate Blanchett at first, but she was one of the oldest living things in Middle Earth, so eventually I thought that she had the right amount of gravitas for that,as opposed to Gandalf, for example, who was more a man of the people, so to speak.

Scoop: Conservation Order Protects 'Middle Earth' Waters
"Forest and Bird is delighted with an Environment Court decision released on Friday that will see a Water Conservation Order placed on the Rangitata River," said Forest and Bird Regional Field Officer Tony Lockwood.
The new Water Conservation Order on the Rangitata River will protect the wide braided river that was the scene for Lord of the Rings filming and is the habitat for 18 species of native fish and rare birds.
"The Water Conservation Order is extremely important to all the anglers, kayakers, and rafters that use the river as well as the unique native fish and birdlife that rely on it," he said.

 ArtsJournal: About Last Night
After the show had become a success, someone asked Mann what made it distinctive, to which he replied with equal terseness, ‘No earth tones.’ Tartikoff is dead and forgotten, and Miami Vice has long since vanished from the air, but Mann continues to make films that partake of its now-ubiquitous sensibility.
Road movie, buddy movie, and romance, it's above all a wistful greeting to middle age (OGIC).
I also liked Annette Bening and Robert Downey, Jr., as Queen Elizabeth and her brother the earl of Rivers.

In the fiction of J. Tolkien, Gelion was a river of Middle-earth in the First Age, the principal river of East Beleriand.
Gelion then passed by Tuar-im-Duinath (the Forest between the Rivers) and emptied into the Great Sea Belegaer.
It then passed into Ossiriand, the Land of Seven Rivers, where it was fed by rivers Ascar, Thalos, Legolin, Brilthor, Duilwen, and Adurant, all rising in the Ered Luin.

Give students some time to sketch in flora, landforms and water: mountains, ridges, forests, rivers, and crops (sugar cane, rice, mangoes, and coconut palms).
Students will gain further evidence for the importance of viewing the processes on earth through the lens of interconnected networks rather than as isolated events.
Students will gain further understanding of dynamic balance by witnessing a scenario in which nature’s inherent ability to remain in balance is thrown off the by intervention of technology.

 The Middle-earth Mysteries
If there were men still living along Celduin (the Running River, which arose in Erebor), why didn't they settle at the point where the Old Forest Road met the river?
The Old Forest Road, according to the book, "was overgrown and disused at its eastern end and led to impassable marshes where the paths had been long lost." The road was originally made by Dwarves.
They are like glimpses of mountains on the distant horizon which we'll never approach.

 Doriath
Doriath was a realm of forests about the great river Sirion, with in it the forests Neldoreth (also Taur-na-Neldor, the northern beech forest), Nivrim (also West-march, an oak forest), and Region (pronounced Reh-gi-on, the main forest).
Additionally, the forests of Brethil and Nan Elmoth were held as part of Doriath, but these last two lay outside the Girdle of Melian.
It was called the Fenced Land (Dor-iath), for its queen, Melian, put a girdle of enchantment about it, so that nobody could enter without King Thingol 's permission.
