 About Eureka Township
Major roadways bordering or in Eureka Township include Interstate 35 to the west; Dakota C.R. 70 to the north; Dakota C.R. 86 to the south; Cedar Avenue, which bisects the township; and Dodd Boulevard, which runs north-south through the township and was one of the first surveyed roads in the state.
The township is located on the fringe of suburban development in Lakeville to the northwest and Farmington to the northeast.
Rice Lake—located in the northwestern part of the township—is commonly considered the source of the Vermillion River (pictured at left—photo by Pat Steege), and dozens of tributaries and drainage ways in the township drain into the Vermillion as it winds its way east through Eureka on its journey to the Mississippi River.

From 1850 to 1854 the township was named Sargent at the suggestion of Dr. Charles Jewett, but after a while the town was named Warsaw, after a town in New York where many of the early settlers had come from.
Later that year Ferris Webster and his sons settled in Webster and because of his prominent role in the townships development, it was decided to name this township in honor of Ferris.
This township had many other names in the begining, First it was named Mimmemanda by goverment surveryours, and later it was known as Carroltown, then Pigtown, named after Magnu Olson's large pig farm.

Located in southeastern Minnesota, Rice County is a truly unique region within the state of Minnesota, straddling the line between prairie and forest.
The presence of fire-breaks such as the Cannon and Straight rivers and the many hills and lakes in western Rice County ensured that not all of the area burned with the same frequency and in part explains why forests came to dominate the western half of the County.
Rice County will be following up on this study with signs marking the location of the better prairie remnants.

About 40 acres of this forest is owned by a land development company who is willing to sell the land to someone who will protect and manage it as a natural area, but there is no single agency or organization that has the money to purchase it.
The Sugarbush forest is on a low-lying to gently rounded upland “island” within the Tibbits Brook wetlands.
It generally occurs on loamy soils developed on portions of glacial till not covered by outwash sands, and often it next to wetlands or open water where it was protected from fire on the presettlement landscape.

The Township's park budget includes a contribution towards matching grants to acquire the property.
They have received a Natural and Scenic Areas grant from the DNR to assist in forest acquisition and are currently raising the remainder of the match money not covered by the new park budget.
