Logging for the 21st Century: Forest Ecology and Regeneration   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Forest species composition, tree age, tree vigor, and tree injuries all influence how forests are affected by insects and diseases.
As the forest ages and individual trees die or lose large branches, small gaps develop in the canopy and shade-tolerant understory trees and shrubs respond by increasing in abundance and height.
Because every forest is different, it is impossible to make recommendations without an inventory of the forest, a clear understanding of the landowner's short- and long-term objectives for income and forest condition following logging, and an understanding of local tree species and their silvics.

Project Learning Tree - Curriculum: Forest Ecology
In The Changing Forest: Forest Ecology module, students examine ecological systems of a forest, analyze interdependencies within a forest ecosystem, and explore factors that shape the development of forests.
Forests support a diversity of plants and animals that vary according to the geographic location of the forest.
By using their adopted forest as a guide, students will be able to identify the various stages of forest succession.

Courses   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Forest Ecology is a required course for students enrolled in TRU's Forestry Transfer Program (transferable to UBC's Faculty of Forestry) and for those in the four-year Bachelor of Natural Resource Sciences (BNRS) at TRU.
These include forest road design and location, geotechnical engineering, forest road drainage; planning, locating and scheduling the harvest; and an international perspective on logging systems and their application to meet silvicultural objectives.
Forest harvesting is a specialized field within forestry, and professional competence within this field (especially road location and design) requires significant course work and an extended field internship, in addition to the minimum standards identified here for the "general" forester.

Ecology of ancient and old growth forests
Ancient Forest is forest that has never been managed, or signifigantly changed by humans, and it is increasingly rare and precious.
Ancient forests are a valuable asset that have often recieved surprisingly little study, and are fast being lost.
In some old-growth forest ecosystems, there are numerous logs across streams which tend to form debris dams that are less common in younger forests.

 GIS in Plant Ecology
The study consisted of a spatially explicit forest community model that generated estimates of the potential natural vegetation for the entire forest area of the then-current climate (1996) and altered climate regimes.
GIS was used to analyze land area occupied by different forest types at different dates, temporal transitions between dates and their driving processes, and successional changes in vegetation.
This was a pilot study to assess the effectiveness of GIS and remote sensing techniques for monitoring the degradation of forests in mountainous regions of the Neotropics.
