  FOREST REGULATIONS
In order to help the forest fulfil both the role of natural refuge and a place for leisure, the Belgian legislators passed a zoning law, in which priority is given to the ecological facet in certain zones, while in others, a socio-recreational role is played up.
Natural and forest reserves are protected under the Ordinance of 27 April 1995 on safeguarding and protecting nature (published in the Moniteur belge of 7 July 1995).
Traffic in woods and forests is regulated by the Ordinance of 30 March 1995 on the frequency of use of the woods and forests in the Brussels Capital Region (published in the MB of 23 June 1995).

 MANAGEMENT
The Soignes Forest is well-known both in Belgium and abroad, by foresters and tourists, thanks to its groves of tall beech.
The exploitability of trees is greater in a forest whose objectives are social in nature.
In a suburban forest, the age of many trees is beyond that of logging because aesthetic or landscaping requirements have taken priority over strictly economic considerations.

In Wallonia, on may 11th, 1995 a decree was voted to change the Belgian Forest Act of 1854, in order to regulate the admittance of the public to the forests.
Nothing can be taken away from the forest, neither it is allowed to leave something behind, except in the case where a special permission has been granted by the forest authority.
For all occasional use of the forest, being every activity at which the forest roads are left, a permission has to be granted by the chief forestry engineer and/or by the forest owner (if the latter is not personified by the chief forestry engineer).

 INTRODUCTION
During the French period (1795-1815), the regeneration of forests was diversified by the-introduction of oak in several valleys.
The Soignes Forest is part of the Natura 2000 network, which, in application of the EU Directives on birds and habitats, brings together important sites throughout Europe.
The three Belgian Regions that manage the Soignes Forest have suggested that their portions of the forest be named “Special Areas of Conservation”, which entails the adoption of special regulations for protection and management.

The Forest of Soignes, the green lung of Brussels, has long been Jephan de Villiers' source of inspiration and material.
Jephan scours the soil of the forest with a stick in search of the one leaf, the one piece of bark, the one cluster of plants which will shape his work, remaining receptive to every quiver and crack, every smell, every colour, every unusual, curious or surprising shape.
The starting point for de Villiers is always what the forest yields to him, and then in the secrecy of his studio, inspired by the acred character of the offering, he moulds and adorns it until it is reborn and clothed in beauty.
