The changing role of Maine's Forest Rangers
Rangers enforce fire prevention statutes that work to minimize the impact of wildfires, such as laws dealing with open burning permits, failure to extinguish a fire and violations of open burning permit restrictions.
While on timber harvesting inspections, Forest Rangers ensure that slash (the by-products of tree cutting) is kept 100 feet from dwellings, 50 feet from public ways and 25 feet from property and utility lines.
Forest Rangers use this opportunity not only to help those regions of the country which desperately need assistance, but also as a training tool to hone their fire management skills and tactics.

 Forest Rangers
There are many stories of these early GLO rangers not doing the jobs they were assigned, going home every day to work their farms or businesses, being unwilling or unable to undergo the rigors of living in the wilderness for long periods of time, or simply not having any knowledge of what they were doing.
In a few cases, GLO rangers were actively involved in land frauds committed by their friends or in accepting money to "assist" homesteaders in obtaining forest land that was immediately sold to speculators or timber companies.
In the spring of 1905, management of the forest reserves (later called national forests) was transferred from the Department of the Interior's GLO to the Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Forestry.

Forest workers who work for State and local governments or who are under contract to the Federal Government also clear away brush and debris from camp trails, roadsides, and camping areas under their employers’ jurisdiction.

THE NYS DEC FOREST RANGERS: A CALL TO ACTION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Because of their specialized expertise, NYS Forest Rangers are frequently sought out by people in their local communities and by visitors who rely on the rangers for information about the public lands, the law and how to conserve our fragile environment.
As a result the Rangers, despite their keen on-the-ground knowledge, have not been systematically involved with unit management planning or implementation and their decision-making authority has been shifted out of their districts and regions to the Albany central office, all of this with negative consequences for the Forest Preserve, its communities, and its visitors.
The Rangers' priority should be to serve as the state agents responsible for stewardship of public lands and of private lands covered by conservation easements.

These early forest rangers, as they would be called, displayed their authority in the form of a badge, usually from some local jurisdiction, or in the case of Yellowstone, the park.
There is a forest reserve ranger badge in a private collection that is stamped "Department of the Interior." This indicates its use before the 1905 separation, for Gifford Pinchot, chief of Agriculture's new Bureau of Forestry, immediately ordered a new badge when he obtained the forest reserves.
The park rangers may have worn this badge or one stamped "park ranger" rather than "forest reserve ranger." If this was the case, though, it seems logical that they would have been known as park rangers instead of forest rangers.
