Most boats have an adjustable forestay which allows the crew to change the mast rake for different wind velocities.
Hold your forestay along the front of the mast and simply mark the forestay at the point where the bottom of the mast would be.
In smooth water, the vang should not be used, so the forestay is as straight as possible.

  Tuning the Fractional Rig
The key to the problem of tuning this type rig is adequate forestay tension and the whole tuning process must be based on a ruthless approach to the matter.
Forestay tension is transmitted directly to the upper shrouds which, via the spreaders, push the mast forward.
However, because the angle between the forestay and the upper shrouds is small in comparison to the angle between the forestay and backstay on a masthead rig, it is necessary to carry considerably greater rig tension in a fractional rig to achieve a comparably straight forestay.

 The B&R Mast
It is possible to rake the mast forward or aft to the desired amount by the correct adjustment of the forestay and backstay.
An attractive way to reduce the mast diameter, and thereby improve the aerodynamics of the rig, is to increase the number of spreaders on the mast.
In heavy weather, if a running backstay, or inner forestay, comes loose for some reason or is not set properly after a gybe or tack, there is a distinct possibility of a mast failure.

 Quantum Tuning Guides - Etchells
Given that all boats are not exactly the same, be prepared to move you mast butt forward or aft to set-up the right balances between forestay tension and mast bend once you hit the water and as conditions changes.
Tighten the forestay by pulling backstay on and set your rake at 46.5" from the fl band mark to the deck where the forestay enters the hull.
There is a complicated relationship between "mast" adjustments to your blocks and butt and the rig set up of forestay, shroud and backstay tensions.

Yngling Tuning Guide   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The spreader angle is measured by stretching a rope from each spreader tip and measuring the distance between the rope and the aft edge of the mast.
North and HJD use different approaches to measure the mast rake.North recommends to stretch the forestay (and upper shrouds, for later) alongside the mast and mark the point on the mast where the main-boom measure is marked (upper edge).
Attach the forestay; then, the length from the mark set on the forestay to the deck should be 106cm [108cm in updated 1999 guide].

The tension on the forestay is controlled by the tension on the backstays, but there is a turnbuckle up inside the roller furling mechanism that can be accessed if needed, to set the "pitch" of the mast on a fore and aft axis.
The bolts that hold the forestay chainplate go through a solid chuck of the same plywood the centerboards are made from and are secured with nylock nuts and washers on the underside of the bridge deck.
The inner forestay was slacked and the piece of wood carefully cut so that it took a bit of force to snug it into a tight fit between the two

Adjusting forestay length with a CDI Roller Reefing Furler
It's not hard to adjust the forestay length inside the CDI, even when the mast is up.
We lengthened the forestay by another 2 or 3 turns and in a few minutes we were sailing again.
After adjusting the length of the forestay, put new cotter pins in the turnbuckle studs and bend them back to keep them in place.

 forestay
The moment of effort exerted by a sail hoisted on the forestay compared with a sail one-half the distance closer to the mainmast is halved.
We find the driving force to be just about right in gale conditions for the small storm jib we have and when the wind begins to abate, extending a bit of genoa keeps the boat moving until it's time to strike the storm jib.
The attachment point on deck was based on considerations of strength, non-interference with deck hardware such as the windlass, parallel alignment with the forestay, and sufficient length for the jib.

505: Stuff Luff Description   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In many boats, the forestay is attached to a piece of flexible wire, which turns around a block, and runs back into the boat to a mechanical advantage and a cleat.
The forestay takes all the rig load as there is no luff wire in the jib with the stuff luff.
Rather than hoisting a jib-with-luff-wire using a halyard, the forestay is disconnected from the boat at the bow and is stuffed into the luff - the enclosed tube made by the folded over cloth tape on the luff - of the jib.

Next, measure and drill a 0.036" hole in the bow deck approximately 0.4" from the front and along the centerline, as shown in the picture.
Connect the snap to the screw eye and adjust the forestay tension to achieve the proper mast alignment (leaning slightly rearward to affect a slightly weather helm - very necessary for good tacking performance with the Victoria).

 91 & 90 TENSION GAUGE
In a fractional rig the forestay does not go all the way to the masthead and forestay tension cannot be directly balanced by tension in the backstay.
A forestay tension of at least 15% of the cable strength is desirable.
For such a rig most of the forestay tension is balanced by the upper shrouds.

Also note, that ram down on a 505 is almost an exact ratio with forestay.

The stoop rig generally comes in one of two variations depending on where the FORESTAY (the wire which supports the mast from the forward side) joins to the mast.
So, when we see a single masted sailboat with a sail fore and aft of the mast and with a forestay that goes to the top of the mast, we call it a "masthead rigged sloop"; and when the forestay is below the masthead, we call it a "jibhead rigged sloop".
