The Royal Burgh of Forfar is a burgh of approximately 13,500 people, located in the unitary authority of Angus in Scotland.
A "claimant" to the throne, the daughter of the leader of the Meic Uilleim, who were descendants of King Duncan II, had her brains dashed out on Forfar market cross in 1215 while still an infant.
Some bridges and cuttings still survive as well as the site of the goods station, which was also the town's original railway station before the one near the county buildings was built.

After a time the Forfar folk got possession of their property, but the Dundee magistrates refused to let it be conveyed away unless the town of Forfar bought all the ground it would pass over between the quay and the boundary of Dundee.
Patrick Abercrombie, physician and historian, was born at Forfar in 1656; and John Jamieson, D.D. (1759-1839), of 0 Scottish Dictionary 'fame, was minister of the Secession congregation from 1780 till 1797.

The municipal and parliamentary constituency was-1871, 16,281; 1877, 18, 964; 1881, 15, 827.
By an act of parliament, passed in June 1830, the management of the harbour was transferred from the commissioners appointed under a previous statute to a board of trustees, elected annually; and by a subsequent act, obtained in the year 1869, the constitution of this trust was changed, and the representation enlarged.
The ex officio members are the Provost of Dundee; the Sheriff Substitutes of Dundee and at Forfar; the embers of Parliament for Dundee; one member elected by Owen's College, Manchester; one by the Lord President of the Privy Council or the Minister of Education; and one by the Principal and Professors of the College.

In the rolls of the parliament, held in Edinburgh in 1357 to arrange the ransom of David II., Montrose occupies the central position among the royal burghs, eight preceding and eight following it, and would therefore appear to have, at that period, attained considerable consequence.
The present trustees are 5 elected by the county, the sheriff of the county, the provost and senior bailie of Montrose, 2 members elected by the town council, 9 chosen by the municipal electors, and 4 elected by the town council of Brechin.
It was acquired by this body from the town council in 1837, under act of parliament, by which a payment of £600 a year in perpetuity is to be made to the latter body.

Jurisdiction over the criminal affairs of the abbey and over its prison was resigned by the monks to a layman; and in the year 1445 the election to this office led to very disastrous consequences.

During the passage through Parliament of the 1994 Act, there was cross-Party understanding that we would review the number of councillors and boundaries of electoral wards for each council in time for changes to be implemented for the 1999 local elections.
Lord Wheatley, provided a basis by which the number of regional councillors and the size of constituency to be represented might be determined by taking into account the fact that population density varies widely in Scotland as a whole and within regions.
In England and Wales the Redcliffe-Maude Commission, which reported to Parliament in 1969, also drew attention to the management problems of large councils and endorsed the recommendation of The Committee on the Management of Local Government that a maximum number of 75 councillors should be set.

A TRIO of young folk cruised into positions in the Scottish Youth Parliament yesterday as the results of the area’s first ‘e-vote’ to the body were revealed.
At an election announcement in the Reid Hall, Forfar, Angus deputy returning officer and local authority law director Catherine Coull declared Brechin’s Nicola Hampton the landslide winner of the North Tayside seat after she polled an overwhelming 63% of the vote.
Both seats which the area was allocated for the Angus constituency went to Arbroath candidates, Rachel McCulloch taking a quarter of the vote and Chris Smith just over a fifth.
