Welding with the heat of a flsmith forge fire, or a coal or illuminating gas fire, can only be performed with iron and steel because of the low heat which is not localized as with the oxy-acetylene and electric processes.
With the work at welding heat, the two parts are driven together by hammering on the rear ends and the hammering then continues as with a lap weld, except that the work is turned over to complete both sides of the joint.
Other forms of welds in which the parts are too small to retain their heat, can be made by first riveting them together or cutting them so that they can be temporarily fastened in any convenient way when first placed in the fire.

Forge welding is a solid state welding process which produces coalescence of metals by heating them in a forge and by applying pressure or blows sufficient to cause permanent deformation at the interface.
Welding this metal to the clean metal of the abutting part is accomplished by diffusion across the interface so that coalescence of the faying surface occurs.
Welding occurs when the ultrasonic tip or electrode, the energy coupling device, is clamped against the work pieces and is made to oscillate in a plane parallel to the weld interface.

After the weld was made, I would stand the billet on its edge and draw it out flattening it on the edge of the weld.

Quickly use your tongs to take your cable from the forge to the anvil, you only have a little bit of time to work at a welding heat ("strike while the iron is hot" means exactly that to the would be smith).

I use mostly torches or arc welding, but I still love forge welding (both gas and coal), because I enjoy trying to overcome all the variables that rule.
Your gas forge needs to get hot enough to make the steel white hot, about 2,500° F. At that temperature the surface of the steel is just at the liquid point.
Welding in a coal forge is tough, but welding in a gas forge is tougher.

It is very rare to see layer counts upwards of 400 because at that count the layers would be so thin you would get carbon migration and the steel would basically no longer be layers but instead one new steel created by virtually mixing the steel together into one new steel.
