Forgent Networks alleges that the patent claims cover the JPEG image compression technology in common use by digital cameras, digital still image devices, personal digital assistants, cellular telephones, digital camcorders, scanners and other devices used to compress, store, manipulate, print or transmit digital images.

I.T. Vibe - Discussion Forum - Forgent Networks sue over JPEG patent claims   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Posted - 24 April 2004 : 11:10:02 AM Forgent Networks has announced that it is to sue 31 companies, including Apple, Adobe Sysems, Agfa, IBM, Macromedia and Toshiba for using it's digital image compression patent (Patent no US4698672) without paying a license fee.
Forgent currently licenses the patent to around thirty existing companies, which has generated about 90 million US dollars in fees so far.
If Forgent are successful in their actions it will no doubt end up being a costly problem for all those companies involved, as well as possibly affecting the use of JPEG technology on a day to day basis.
