Forgotten Silver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was written and directed by Costa Botes and Peter Jackson (of The Lord of the Rings fame), both of whom star in the film as documentary makers.
It purported to tell the story of 'forgotten' New Zealand filmmaker Colin McKenzie, his lost films and his technological achievements that predated accepted history by as much as 20 years — in fact, McKenzie is a fictional character.
Despite being aired on NZ Television in a time slot usually dedicated to plays and mini-series, Forgotten Silver was billed and introduced as a serious documentary.

Forgotten Silver is one of those films you've probably never heard of but once you see it, you'll wonder why.
Well, when "Forgotten Silver" aired on New Zealand television it convinced quite a few Kiwi that they had a new national hero in Colin McKenzie, the lost film director who is the topic of this effort.
There is fun to be had in showing "Forgotten Silver" to unsuspecting friends, family and people dragged in off of the street, to see at what point they catch on that there is something amiss here.

 Forgotten Silver on DVD
Forgotten Silver has the air of authenticity partly because it uses empiricist strategies of recording history which we have all encountered: "found" facts (lost film), woven into a linear narrative propelled by the perseverance and genius of outstanding individuals (Colin McKenzie).
Forgotten Silver is very much a film about how film history is recorded.
Forgotten Silver demonstrates that Jackson is one of contemporary cinema's most talented and eclectic directors.

FORGOTTEN SILVER is Peter Jackson's loving "tribute" to fictional New Zealand film pioneer Colin MacKenzie.
Various techniques were used by Jackson and Botes to mimic the look of film clips from the silent era, including the use of vintage cameras, shooting with negatives that had been briefly exposed to light to make them look foggy, and further "aging" of the completed footage in the lab through mechanical wear and tear.

"Forgotten silver" (just like Woody Allen's classic "Zelig") is filled with silly, senseless and absurd ideas and details to make it all sound a bit too suspicious to be actually true but not enough to make it completely unbelievable either.
'Forgotten Silver' suggests that real part doesn't even have to be real, as long as the story's good.
Anyone expecting belly laughs from 'Forgotten Silver' is probably going to be disappointed, because viewed as a story, this isn't a comedy - it's a tragedy.

Wellington Film Society - FORGOTTEN SILVER
Imagine also the surprise of the viewers of FORGOTTEN SILVER (playing for one week at the Nuart in West Los Angeles) as they come to realize that the man who directed those lost silent films, New Zealander Colin McKenzie, never really existed.
Another gleeful theme of FORGOTTEN SILVER is how important pint-sized New Zealand would be if the true history of the 20th century could be written.
FORGOTTEN SILVER is mostly concerned with McKenzie's masterpiece, the four-hour Salome, the only biblical epic to be jointly financed by a crude slapstick clown, a gang of mobsters and Joseph Stalin.

Jackson's presentation of the filmmaker's life put New Zealand on the map in many innovative ways, and that was fun, but after a while, the idea fizzled.

Lags between major moves in gold and silver are not terribly uncommon, and considering the fact that the market for silver futures has had to absorb far more excess supply than gold, we believe a come-from-behind rally is currently in the works.
March Silver future prices are currently at $4.70 and are practically right up against the rim of the bowl, which means a reaction to the upside should follow, possibly within the next 1-2 days.
This is exactly the picture that silver has been etching out in recent weeks and months, and yet one final obstacle remains-the final downtrend line that presently crosses the $4.72 area.

Jackson and Botes' clever conception of a silent comedian might be an intentional elbow-jab to those taken in by the docu - Stan the Man is a guerilla comedian who pulls pranks on unknowing citizens candid-camera style, pushing them into ponds and slapping pies in their faces.
Forgotten Silver is nowhere near as mean-spirited; never exactly fall-down funny, the real reaction is flabbergasted awe at the recreations of fairly large-scale, Griffith-like silent movie scenes.

In watching Forgotten Silver I feel like I have discovered a “lost” and little-known masterwork which truly must be shared with as many film fans as possible, just as the film itself seeks to gain notoriety for its “lost” and little-known subject.
Presented here is a version of the history of cinema itself through chronicling the life of a man so devoted and inspired by the very craft of film that he developed many of the techniques and mechanics of cinema ahead of their time.
Forgotten Silver professes that McKenzie built his own cameras in ingenious ways, invented the tracking shot, close-up, synched sound, color film, feature-length movies, hidden camera “comedy,” Biblical epics, etc. but never got credit due to the forces of fate.

The centenary of the achievement of the Wright Brothers will be celebrated in 2003 as one of the defining moments of the Twentieth Century – etched in its symbolic consciousness as an emblem of imagination and technological triumph in man’s enduring engagement with nature.
Conversely Pearse, largely forgotten until remains of one of his prototype airplane models were discovered in a Christchurch garage forty to fifty years ago, died in obscurity and his achievements have been clouded by the controversy over whether or not he "flew" before the fully documented Wright Brother’s flights.
From a land of travellers, whose national symbol is a blind, flightless bird, came a eccentric visionary with a soaring imagination who managed, against the most improbable odds, far away from any centre, of scientific debate or knowledge, to upset assumptions and become airborne.

The film deals with the career of a supposedly forgotten pioneer of international cinema, Colin McKenzie, who was allegedly born in rural New Zealand in 1888.
McKenzie had been completely forgotten until decomposing reels of his films were discovered in a shed in the garden of Hannah McKenzie, his second wife, who happened to be a neighbor of Jackson's parents.
According to the film, McKenzie became fascinated with all things mechanical at an early age and invented a motion picture camera in 1900 when he was 12; unlike other early cameras, this one was mechanized by being attached first to a bicycle and later to a steam engine, allowing for trailblazing tracking shots.

 Forgotten Silver
Forgotten Silver was a famous (or infamous, depending on your interpretation) mock-documentary hoax which screened on primetime New Zealand television.
It was the text which first sparked our interest in mock-documentary - the Screen and Media Studies Department at the University of Waikato, where we both worked at the time, received a number of excited calls asking if the programme was real, and requesting more information on the discovery of 'Colin McKenzie'.
McKenzie, claimed Forgotten Silver, deserved a place in the pantheon of early cinema pioneers.
