Other common types of pitches are the curveball, slider, changeup, forkball, and knuckleball.
These generally are intended to have unusual movement or deceive the batter as to the rotation or velocity of the ball, making it more difficult to hit.

Forkball - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Related to the split-fingered fastball, the forkball is held between the first two fingers and thrown hard without snapping the wrist.
The forkball differs from the split-fingered fastball, however, in that the ball is jammed deeper between the first two fingers.
The forkball is favored by several Japanese pitchers.

Forkball: also called a "split-fingered fastball", the forkball is thrown with the index and middle fingers spread wide about the narrow pair of seams on the ball, requiring large and strong hands to grip.
The forkball has a high velocity and a moderate negative spin about the X-axis, which causes the ball to drop quickly towards the end of its flight.
Some pitchers throw a "sinker", which has the same rotation as the forkball but is easier to grip and throw.

He actually modeled his grip after Jose Contreras, who throws a forkball that sometimes has no spin, although Jose calls it a splitter.
The only real difference between a splitter and forkball is what the pitcher wants to call it.
Minor correction: In most cases, a splitter is gripped just outside the seams and a forkball is gripped at 3 and 9 with the insides of two hurting fingers (unless you have big hands).

Sake-Drenched Postcards - Unwinding the Mystery of the Gyroball (Part II)
Himeno got his start in modeling baseball movements with the forkball, a pitch that takes a sudden dive after it crosses the plate.
The forkball will approach the plate looking like a heater but its little rotation causes gravity to send it sinking.
Himeno's conclusion: the two-seam gyroball drops like a forkball; the four-seam gyroball drops, too, but less; both variations generate much less drag than a forkball, causing them to arrive to the plate faster.

Contreras' forkball is unpredictable and the catcher favored a fastball, because it is a surer strike.
Contreras' forkball didn't dive like it usually does, staying up in the strike zone, but Matsui hit an easy pop, delighting the normally stoic Contreras.

Fastball - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gripping the ball with the fingers across the wide part of the seam ("four-seam fastball") produces a straight pitch, gripping it across the narrow part ("two-seam fastball") produces a sinking fastball, and holding a two-seam fastball off-center ("cut fastball") imparts lateral movement to the fastball.
A variation on the fastball is the forkball and the similar split-finger fastball.
