The main difference between sixteenth century French and Dutch gardens is that the Dutch gardens tended to be on a smaller scale than French gardens.
By the middle of seventeenth century the French formal garden was becoming the dominant style in Europe, this style is mainly a creation of Andre le Notre, and since it was the last style of formal gardening to be developed in Europe, it has had a huge influence on people1s ideas about formal gardens.
For example, until the seventeenth century, most formal gardens were not perfectly symmetrical, the various parts the garden were usually symmetrical, but it was rare for one half of the garden to mirror the other half.

This is a small "hanging garden" which forms an integral part of the Palazzo and indeed of the entire town of Pienza, a small renaissance jewel in central Tuscany.

The Tyler Gardens were constructed in 1931 by George Frederick and Stella Elkins Tyler to provide a formal landscape setting for Council Rock, their mansion, built between 1930 and 1932.

Crowds flocked to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on Friday to see what the big stink was about — the rare blooming of a cultivated amorphophallus titanum, one of the world’s largest flowers.
As fate would have it, the aroma peaked during the wee hours when the garden was closed and some who turned out to get a whiff seemed almost disappointed to have missed its peak.
But the garden’s experts have obtained pollen and will manually pollinate “baby.” If successful, that will produce seeds that will be distributed to other gardens.
