Formamide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Formamide, also known as Methanamide (IUPAC) and Carbamaldehyde, formula HCONH
In its pure form, it dissolves many ionic compounds that are insoluble in water, so it is also used as a solvent.
Formamide is also a constituent of cryoprotectant vitrification mixtures used for cryopreservation of tissues and organs.

The ratio of the slopes is close to 0.5; this means that on average, the presence of one formamide is sufficient to block 50% of the electron transfer.
Table 4 indicates that formamide is a less effective inhibitor of vesicular oxidase than it is of soluble oxidase.

The solution properties of amphiphilic molecules in nonaqueous polar solvents are important in the elucidation of the effects of solvent quality on self-assembly and also in practical applications where the use of water as a solvent is undesirable.
The enthalpy and entropy of micellization in formamide are about 3 times smaller than the respective quantities in water.

Mechanism of Degradation of Purine Nucleosides by Formamide. Implications for Chemical DNA Sequencing Procedures   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
We describe the reaction of formamide with 2`-deoxyadenosine and 2`-deoxyguanosine to give imidazole ring opening by nucleophilic addition on the electrophilic C(8)-position of the purine ring.
The reactivity with formamide of several 7-deazapurine analogues (7-deaza-2`-deoxyinosine, 7-deaza-2`-deoxyguanosine, and 7-deaza-2`-deoxyadenosine) incorporated into polynucleotides is also described.
The wide spectrum of different sensitivities to formamide displayed by these purine analogues provides the single-lane DNA chemical sequencing procedures with the possibility of wide-ranging signal intensity modulation and thus increased specificity.

In many instances, use of a very low ionic strength formamide for sample preparation provides key benefits to the final results.
Low conductivity formamide affects the electric field across the capillary so that the DNA fragments do not migrate down the capillary during the loading process.
Furthermore, with minimal ions in the loading solvent, most of the current is carried by the DNA fragments.
