Method for deploying extendable arm for formation evaluation MWD tool - Patent 5242020
In certain formation evaluation tools, it is important to minimize the distance between the borehole wall and both the source (e.g., nuclear) and detector assemblies in the tool.
For example, three extending arms may be utilized for formation porosity evaluation (housing a neutron source and a pair of neutron detectors), formation density evaluation (a gamma-ray source and a pair of gamma-ray detectors) and formation resistivity measurements (a pair of electrodes).
Formation evaluation is executed with the arm in a closed position and the data therefrom is sent to the surface in real time using known MWD techniques.

Formation evaluation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mud logging is a well logging process in which drilling mud and drill bit cuttings from the formation are evaluated during drilling and their properties recorded on a strip chart as a visual analytical tool and stratigraphic cross sectional representation of the well.
This voltage is therefore proportional to the resistivity of the formation.
Thus the presence or absence of gamma rays in a section of borehole is an indication of the amount of shale or clay in the surrounding formation.

Composite shell for protecting an antenna of a formation evaluation tool - Patent 5212495
Typically, electromagnetic based evaluation tools include a housing, which forms part of the drillstring, a transmitting antenna mounted in the housing and a pair of receiving antennas mounted in the housing.
An electromagnetic wave is propagated from the transmitting antenna into the formation surrounding the borehole and is detected as it passes the receiving antennas.
A formation evaluation tool including a housing having a circumferential groove defined in its surface, an antenna loop surrounding the housing and secured within the groove and elastomeric means for protecting said antenna loop from shock and moisture is disclosed.

To obtain knowledge of the formation below, cuttings and fluids brought to the surface by bailing operations were dumped on the ground and examined by Chinese drillers.
Field applications have demonstrated that measurement of formation density is a useful and revealing technique for determining the porosity, lithology, and fluid content of formations in conditions that hamper other logging methods, such as the logging of empty or gas-filled holes.
The Schlumberger formation- testing tool, placed in operation in 1953, fires a shaped charge through a rubber pad that has been expanded in the hole until it is securely fixed in the hole at the depth required.

The DFT tool is an LWD based formation test tool using dual inflatable packers to isolate the zone of interest, and to directly measure the formation pressure.
Abstract: Cost efficient formation evaluation is not only about the cost of the logging run, or LWD service, and the quality of the data, but also about getting as much out of the data as possible.
The presenter, who was involved in the project as the Formation Evaluation expert, will present these ideas as they were practised in the Gjallar project.

Sequence Analysis of Petrophysical Data for Improved Formation Evaluation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The depth relationship between samples is fundamental to defining diagenetic facies and is available in all core reports, but geological sequence variations are generally not included in Formation Evaluation or in the characterization and analysis of diagenetic overprints on the normal burial and cementation poro/perm trends of each depositional population.
A sequence approach in the analysis of well log data and core petrophysical data allows geologists, especially those experienced in SEM and microscopic studies of pores, to apply their experience and rock insights to the log analysis of carbonate reservoirs, particularly Formation Factor and understanding Archie’s ‘m’ exponent.
Using conductivity versus porosity rather than resistivity versus porosity also allows geologists to better conceptualize formation evaluation of log data in geological terms and make use of this data in their studies.
