rufa is highly polygynous and often re-adopts post-nuptial queens from its own mother colony, leading to old, multi gallery nests which may contain well over a hundred egg-producing females.
Formica rufa is aggressively territorial, and will often attack and remove other ant species from the area.

TAXONOMY AND ZOOGEOGRAPHY OF WOOD ANTS OF THE FORMICA RUFA-GROUP
rufa group are important key species in forest ecosystems having potential to modify arthropod community by predation and resource competition.
The species group form colonies, which differ in size and colony structure, thus having differences in their ecological significance.
These features make wood ants as a suitable group for studies concerning social structure, competition, forest ecology etc. Species identification, however, has been difficult and partly controversial, and thus, studies using wood ants may have been neglected to some extent.
