Thanasimus formicarius - literature   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The apparent strategy used by T. formicarius for finding its prey is to perceive various bark beetle and tree volatiles, then after determining the quality of the perceived mixture of odors, to approach the emitter of a preferred mixture.
RS estimated from regression of recapture of marked Cyclas formicarius (Curculionidae) after 16 h of sampling was 390 m for a high dose (10.mu.g) and 94 m for a low dose (0.01.mu.g).
The clerid Thanasimus formicarius made up 32.3% of the total number of predators caught in the years 1980 and 1981; the staphylinids Placusa tachyporoides 28.6%, Quedius laevigatus 4.5%, Nudobius lentus 48%; the ostomid Nemosoma elongatum 14.3%; the nitidulids Rhizophagus ferrugineus 4.3% and R. depressus 1.6%, Epuraea ruformarginata 9.6%.

However, a bottom-up process limits Thanasimus formicarius’ impact on spruce bark beetles, because in most cases the bark of spruce is too thin for sheltering pupal niches and mature larvae have to leave the trees.
At the tree level, funnels and pitfall-traps caught high numbers of third-instar T. formicarius larvae (L3s) walking on the bark surface of standing spruces infested by Ips typographus (respectively 365 and 70 L3s).
Indeed, Thanasimus formicarius are trapped in higher numbers in mixed stands comprising pines.

 Florida Entomologist, v. 79, n. 3, p. 363
Cylas formicarius were reared in the laboratory using methods described previously (Mannion and Jansson 1992).
All nematode-infected G. mellonella larvae and only those C. formicarius larvae infected in the first three trials were removed from the tissue culture plates and placed in individual, modified White traps (White 1924) and incubated in the dark at 25±2°C. Cadavers were inspected daily for nematode emergence.
Bacardis was most infective and reproductive against C. formicarius, and, for this reason, it should be a suitable nematode for use in biological control of this weevil.

The sweetpotato weevil (SPW), Cylas formicarius Fabricius, is one of the most destructive pests of the sweetpotato.
The sweetpotato weevil (SPW), Cylas formicarius Fabricius, is the most destructive pest of sweetpotato, both in the field and in storage (Chalfant 1990; Hwang 1994; Sutherland 1986).
formicarius, including isolation, identification, synthesis, pheromone formulation, trap design, and practical application techniques, is well advanced, and has great potential for improving current SPW management programs.

 The Search for Formicarius rufifrons
And if Parker didn't know it, chances were neither did science; he seemed to have stumbled onto a new species, not unheard of for Peru at that time, but still remarkable in a relatively well-known place like Cosha Cashu.
Too remarkable to be true, in fact--once in hand, the true identity of the elusive singer was established as Formicarius rufifrons, the Rufous-fronted Antthrush, described from a few specimens collected in the 1950's, then summarily forgotten, going unrecorded for the better part of three decades before being resurrected by Parker's superhuman ears.
This is an extremely specific and patchily distributed habitat, periodically inundated in large floods, which probably explains why the birds were able to escape detection for so long.

Bacardis and FL2122 strains and H. bacteriophora Poinar HP88 strain were studied in two insect hosts, an apionid Cylas formicarius and a pyralid Galleria mellonella.
Bacardis and FL2122 strains, were of tropical or subtropical origin, whereas the third nematode, H. bacteriophora HP88 strain, was of temperate origin.
Patterns of emergence from cadavers were consistent in G. mellonella; most progeny emerged by 23 d after inoculation and emergence lasted for up to 48 d after inoculation.
