Formics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Formics are able to communicate instantaneously via philotic connections; through studying the Formic technology leftover as wreckage from the Formic Wars, humans learned to harness gravity, and faster-than-light communication via the ansible which uses the same type of philotic connections that the Formics used.
The initial reaction at the destruction of all of the Formics was jubilation on the part of humanity.
The Formics placed the egg on the colony world in a landscape terraformed to match the outlay of the landscape in a psychoanalytical game that Ender played in Battle School, so that he would recognize it.

Mazer's victory of the Formics had hinged on the fact that, when there were only a few starship fighters able to keep the invaders away from Earth, he had attacked and blown up one ship - and the entire enemy army died in space.
The Formics, he later theorised, were a hive species, with a number of workers under the will of a queen.

Ender’s Shadow - Orson Scott Card
A couple hundred years in the future, an enigmatic, insect-like alien race called the Formics (but referred to by most people as the "Buggers") has attacked the Earth twice.
In an attempt to increase their chances of victory in the inevitable Third Invasion, the world government (a tenuous alliance held together only by the threat of the Formics) starts collecting exceptionally bright children and shipping them off to an orbital Battle School to train them for the next invasion.
In the hopes that one of the children will turn out to be the next Alexander the Great or Napoleon, they group the children into "armies" that compete with each other in a war game around which most of the Battle School’s activity revolves.

I am not sure exactly about the Formics, if every single one of them has a self-identity or not, but it is certainly an interesting subject.
I don't really have any deeply philosphical, but I would like to say that that sequence in Xenocide near the end where Human and the Hive Queen were talking about how the humans had finally found a replacement for the Descolada was one of the funniest sequences in that series.
I believe she is a great character in the series, besides I like how OSC uses her to give an alien point of view about humanity while she is discussing with Human.

 Barnes & Noble.com - Ender's Shadow - Orson Scott Card - Mass Market Paperback
Ender's Game, first published in novel form in 1985, describes the relentlessly brutal education of Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, a preadolescent military genius believed to be humankind's last, best hope against the anticipated invasion of an insectile race of aliens called the Formics.
As the novel opens, the Formics — popularly known as "the Buggers" — have already made two unsuccessful attempts to conquer and colonize Earth, and xenophobia now runs rampant, temporarily uniting a wide range of political and ideological factions.
Ender, together with a handpicked group of gifted, if slightly less brilliant children, is conscripted and sent to a remote space station called the Battle School, where he participates in a series of war games that prepare him, by the age of 9, for the responsibilities of military command.
