Formosa Magazine quickly became the rallying point for the budding democratic movement.
During the fall of 1979, it became increasingly vocal, and it was only natural that it would use 10 December as an opportunity to express its views on the lack of democracy and human rights on the island.

In 1984, I was the owner of Formosa magazine, a publication that offered a venue for opposition politicians to air their views.
I was accused of libel for comments published in Formosa magazine that someone's dissertation was "a translation rather than a creation." In fact, seven professors had examined that article chapter by chapter and concluded that it was plagiarism.
Although the magazine carried the truth, as the director of the magazine, I was sentenced to eight months in prison.

The Kaohsiung Incident, also known as the Formosa Incident, was an anti-government demonstration organized by Formosa Magazine on Dec. 10, 1979.
The magazine was a front for a broad alliance of tang wai (meaning outside the KMT) activists.
Originally meant to be a march in commemoration of International Human Rights Day, the event turned into a violent confrontation when members of the crowd unknown to the organizers -- and widely believed to have been agents provocateurs -- began attacking police.
