Formosus, and, on the death of Louis II (875), employed him with two other bishops to convey his invitation to Charles the Bald, King of France, to come to Rome and receive the imperial crown from the hands of the pope.
Formosus was among the fugitives, as he dreaded the anger of the pope without knowing exactly whereby he had incurred the papal resentment.
Formosus insisted on a distinction of persons; indulgence might be readily shown in the case of the laity, but in the case of clerics such a course was attended with difficulties; the rule must be the

Lambert was crowned king and emperor alongside his father in April 892 at Pavia by a reluctant Pope Formosus.
Lambert was preoccupied in thwarting the attempts of both Berengar of Friuli and Arnulf of Carinthia to take Italy for themeselves during his reign.
The vengeful Lambert and Aglitrude persuaded Pope Stephen VII to put the corpse of Formosus on trial for various crimes in 897, then have the body stripped of its papal robes, mutiliated, and thrown into the River Tiber (see Cadaver Synod).

Ghastly Spectacle: the Trial of Pope Formosus
In what was probably the most grisly and uncanny court case ever, the body of Pope Formosus was propped up in a chair, wrapped in papal vestments, and presented with the charges.
Formosus being unable to answer the charges personally, an eighteen-year-old deacon was provided to answer for him, as he himself would have responded.
Perhaps this young deacon had talents as a medium, but whatever the case, his defense was not strong enough, and Formosus was, predictably, convicted of all charges in what would come to be known as the “Cadaver Synod”.

Formosus was accused of (1) perjury, (2) coveting the papacy, and (3) violating church canons when he was elected pope.
Sergius III, who was pope from 904 to 911, reversed the decisions of the synods of Theodore II and John IX by convening a synod which quashed their invalidations of the Cadaver Synod and reaffirmed Formosus's conviction and sentence.
According to The Oxford Dictionary of Popes, Sergius III was a "violent hater of Formosus" and had been elected pope by an "anti-Formosan faction." In fact, Sergius III, while a bishop, had actually taken part in the Cadaver Synod where he was one of the clergy coerced into serving as co-judges with Stephen VII.

THE STRANGE CASE OF POPE FORMOSUS (This Rock: January 1998)
According to historian J. Kelly, Formosus was found guilty by Stephen VI of "perjury, violating the canons prohibiting the translation of bishops, and coveting the papacy." He was not accused of professing or teaching a heretical doctrine contrary to the Catholic faith.
The main charge of those brought against Formosus was the ostensible violation of the fifteenth canon of the Council of Nicaea, which forbade the translation or transfer of a bishop from one see to another, as occurred upon his election to the papacy.
The nullification of Formosus’s orders was the inevitable consequence of Formosus being found in violation of canon fifteen, which called for such arrangements to be "totally annulled." Whether one judged the orders conferred by Formosus to be annulled depended on whether one found him guilty of breaking this ecclesiastical canon.
