Fornix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fornix is also the name of part of the cervix.
The fornix is a C-shaped bundle of fibres (axons) in the brain, and carries signals from the hippocampus to the mammillary bodies and septal nuclei.
The inferior edge of the septum pellucidum (a membrane that separates the left and right ventricles) is attached to the upper face of the fornix body.

Most of the fibers in the fornix, however, pass through the corpora, cross the middle line and turn downward in the reticular formation in which they are said to be traceable as far as the pons and possibly farther.
As the fornix passes beneath the corpus callosum it receives fibers from the longitudinal striæ of the indusium and from the cingulum; these are the perforating fibers of the fornix which pass through the corpus callosum and course in the fornix toward the mammillary body.
Aside from the fibers of the fornix which pass through the mammillary body to decussate and descend (as the mammillo-mesencephalic fasciculus), many fibers are said to pass into the bundle of Vicq d’Azyr, and one bundle of fibers is said to pass from the fornix to the tuber cinereum.

Aggleton, John P. & Brown, Malcolm W. (1999) Episodic memory, amnesia, and the hippocampal-anterior thalamic axis.
Taken together, the cases with presumed fornix damage and apparently unchanged memory (Gargcia-Bengochea and Friedman 1987; see also Woolsey and Nelson, 1975) far outnumbered the few single case studies in which fornix damage appeared to be associated with amnesia.
The status of the fornix was examined using MRI, and this revealed a clear association between bilateral fornix damage and a loss of recent verbal and nonverbal memory.
Similarly, fornix lesions on their own have very little effect on the standard DNMS task, but they are able to exacerbate the effects of cutting the ventral amygalofugal pathway/temporal stem which disconnects rhinal projections to the medial thalamus (Bachevalier et al.

The increased retention of the device fitted in the upper fornix means the device can be used to deliver drugs to the eyes to treat ailments requiring long term continuous treatment, ie one application for the treatment or prevention of infection or allergy or application every 1 to 3 months or longer for chronic diseases.
By locating the device within the fornix, the device is imperceptible to the patient, through restriction of the device to a specific size range and shape, with the upper limit not being governed by the geometric space limitation of the whole eye, and by placement specifically within the fornix, not simply within the conjunctival cul-de-sac.
The insert device of the present invention must be positioned precisely and remain anchored in the upper or lower fornix, known also as the superior conjunctival fornix or the inferior conjunctival fornix, as distinct from the positioning of other kinds of devices anywhere in the conjunctival cul-de-sac.

Fornix changes corporate structure and presents research results
The provisional results reported by Fornix in August of this year of the STARDROP study among patients aged 6—18 of the safety and efficacy of the Oralgen® Grass Pollen product, which was completed in 2005, have been confirmed by the final report on the study.
Fornix intends to pursue the clinical development of F991 by entering into a cooperation agreement with a suitable pharmaceutical partner and expects the findings of the recent Phase IIA study to improve the prospects of concluding such an agreement.
If Fornix is able to find a partner for F991, it will bring Fornix's last biotech research project to a conclusion, consistent with the strategy adopted by the company some time ago to focus more on projects which are at an advanced stage of development.

The regenerating fornix fibers followed the origi- nal pathway, reinnervated their appropriate target, the mammil- lary body, were remyelinated and attained nearly normal conduc- tion properties.
The present results demonstrate that the failure of postcommissural fornix regeneration in rat brain, in fact, depends upon the formation of an axon growth-inhibiting BM at the lesion site that is oriented perpendicular to the tract course.
From these data we conclude that the reorganization of the fornix tract is accompanied by structural and functional recovery of the regenerated axons.

At the level of the foramen of Monro, the fornix is easily visualized as a discrete 2-3 mm wide white fiber bundle.
In still other illustrative embodiments, the fornix lesion can be created by excitotoxically, or by other chemical means, inhibiting or ablating fornix neurons, or the cells of the hippocampus which are innervated by fornix neurons.
